McLean’s Selections For Fasig-Tipton’s Select Yearling Sale On July 11

LEXINGTON, KY – For the past several years, I’ve been reviewing each of the major Thoroughbred Sales – from yearlings, to 2-year-olds, to Horses of Racing Age, and, including, weanlings and breeding stock sales – marking the sales catalogues with notes and dog-earring the pages of those that have special interest to me.

My interest may be due to a young sire that I think may have a “better than average” chance to become a good stallion. That interest may be due to a female family that has produced some very good runners in the past. That interest may be the fact that the family tree is dotted with good “broodmare sires;” or a particular cross has worked before; or that a certain horse that I like happens to show up in the pedigree.

I keep a spreadsheet on my computer of each of these sales, and as those horses mature, I try to check on their progress at the racetrack. If they make the races, I note it. If they win a race, I denote it. If they win a stakes race, then I black letter it.

For the first time, though, I will begin to publish my “list” of horses that – on pedigree alone – that I have marked as “interesting.” Or, I have marked as “horses to go see,” if possible. Or, I have penciled into the margin that they may be in my very “reasonable” – or limited — price range and worth watching the sale in the ring, if possible.

The horses that I have marked in Bold Letters or I have highlighted in a particular color, are those that I find most interesting and worthy of further review and examination.
