STAKES WINNERS STAY AND SCAM, LAULNE HEADLINE SATURDAY’S $100,000 WISHING WELL STAKES FOR FILLIES AND MARES GOING 6 FURLONGS ON TURF AT SANTA ANITA

ARCADIA, CA (Feb. 17, 2025)—Stay and Scam and Laulne will each try to add another stakes win to their resumé’s when they meet in Saturday’s $100,000 Wishing Well Stakes for fillies and mares sprinting six furlongs on turf at Santa Anita. The Wishing Well is restricted to older females who have not won a graded stakes since Aug. 1, 2024.

Stay and Scam is a two-time stakes winner for trainer Doug O’Neill who has also placed in a pair of graded stakes. A 5-year-old California-bred mare by Square Eddie, Stay and Scam most recently finished second in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint sprinting about 6 ½ furlongs on Santa Anita’s hillside turf course Jan. 18.

Stay and Scam will have Frankie Dettori aboard for the first time. A homebred for Reddam Racing, Stay and Scam is 18: 6-4-5 with $465,360 in earnings.

Laulne, trained by Phil D’Amato, will be making her second start following an eight-month layoff. Winner of last year’s Angels Flight on the hillside course in April, Laulne returned Jan. 19 in the GIII Las Cienegas and was never a factor sprinting down the hill.

Laulne has lured the services of top rider Flavien Prat for the first time. Bred in France, where she made her first six starts, Laulne is 10: 4-1-3 with $193,262 in earnings. The 4-year-old filly by Starsspangledbanner is owned by Madaket Stables, Panic Stable, Gerard Augustin-Normand, Robert V. Lapenta and William Strauss.

The up-and-comer in the field is Queen Maxima, who enters off back-to-back allowance wins for trainer Jeff Mullins. She won a first-level allowance going six furlongs on turf at Santa Anita Dec. 29 and came back to clear her second-level allowance condition sprinting on the hillside turf course Jan. 23.

Bred in Florida, Queen Maxima is a 4-year-old filly by Bucchero. She has three wins and a pair of runner-up finishes in six career starts. In her lone previous stakes try, Queen Maxima finished second in the Unzip Me Stakes sprinting down the hill in September.

Queen Maxima will have Juan Hernandez aboard. She is owned by Irving Ventures LLC and Michael Arthur.
