It is a horse race. Imagine that. Going into this week of Thanksgiving, the race for the Trainer’s title at this Fall’s race meeting at Churchill Downs is tighter than a 3-horse photo.  At the top are Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, up-and-coming Brad Cox and the willy veteran Eddie Kenneally.

But they are not the only three, mind you, that still have a chance to get in the picture, so to speak. Mark Casse, Ken McPeek, Dale Romans, Chris Hartman, and Mike Maker are just one hot day away from putting their noses and credentials into consideration, as well.

Just consider:

Going into this week’s action, Asmussen has 8 wins, 2 seconds and 8 thirds and has amassed $339,941 in total earnings. Cox, on the other hand, has one more win with 9 firsts, 6 seconds and 2 thirds for a total of $297,398 in purse money. Kenneally, who jumped off to a speedy start, has 7 wins, 4 seconds and 3 thirds, with a total of $254,162 in earnings.

Sitting on the brink, though, are Casse, McPeek and Hartman — with five wins each — and Maker, who has 4 win photos.

This week should go a long way in determining the Trainer’s Title, for sure. In addition to the regular schedule of Thanksgiving Day activities and races, all the top conditioners are gearing up for the meet’s top Stakes races, too.
