Nine alumni of Keeneland sales, including morning-line favorite Improbable, are among the 13 horses entered in the $1.5 million Preakness (G1) to be run Saturday at Pimlico.
Keeneland sales have produced 24 Preakness winners, including nine of the past 12 with undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify taking the race in 2018. Other winning sales graduates during that period are Curlin (2007), Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Big Brown (2008), Lookin At Lucky (2010), Shackleford (2011), Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another (2012), Oxbow (2013), Exaggerator (2016) and Cloud Computing (2017).
Keeneland sales graduates entered in the 2019 Preakness are:
Alwaysmining (Stay Thirsty-What Will Be) – With six consecutive wins that include five stakes at Laurel Park, Alwaysmining is a graduate of two Keeneland sales. Hunter Valley Farm, agent, consigned him as a yearling to the 2017 January Horses of All Ages Sale, where he sold to 3-D Bloodstock for $32,000. At the 2017 September Sale, Alwaysmining was consigned by Allied Bloodstock and purchased by Jim McIngvale for $130,000. Kelly Rubley trains the gelding, bred by Avla Pitts, for Runnymede Racing. He will be ridden by Daniel Centeno.
Bodexpress (Bodemeister-Pied a Terre) – Martha Jane Mulholland bred the Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) runner-up, who was offered by her family’s Mulholland Springs at the 2017 September Sale. Gustavo Delgado trains Bodexpress for Top Racing, Global Thoroughbred and GDS Racing Stable. He will be ridden by John Velazquez.
Bourbon War (Tapit-My Conquestadory) – Conquest Stables bred the Xpressbet Fountain of Youth (G2) runner-up, who is a graduate of two Keeneland sales. Lane’s End, agent, consigned the colt as a weanling to the 2016 November Breeding Stock Sale, where he sold for $410,000 to S. L. P. H. Hidden Brook, agent, offered him at the 2017 September Sale. Bourbon War, trained by Mark Hennig, races for Bourbon Lane Stable and Lake Star Stable and will be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr.
Everfast (Take Charge Indy-Awesome Surprise) – Owner Calumet Farm purchased the Holy Bull (G2) runner-up as a yearling for $47,000 at the 2017 January Sale, where he was consigned by Frankfort Park Farm, agent. Bred by Extern Developments, Everfast will be ridden by Joel Rosario for trainer Dale Romans.
Improbable (City Zip-Rare Event) – Trained by Bob Baffert for WinStar Farm, China Horse Club International and Starlight Racing, the Arkansas Derby (G1) and Rebel (G2) runner-up is a graduate of two Keeneland sales. Lane’s End, agent, consigned him as a weanling to the 2016 November Sale, where he sold for $110,000 to Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Taylor Made consigned the colt to the 2017 September Sale, where Maverick Racing and China Horse Club purchased him for $200,000. Bred by St. George Farm and G. Watts Humphrey Jr., Improbable will be ridden by Mike Smith.
Laughing Fox (Union Rags-Saskawea) – Chester and Anne Prince bred the Oaklawn Invitational winner, who was consigned by Baccari Bloodstock to the 2017 September Sale and sold to George Yeager for $120,000. Steve Asmussen trains Laughing Fox for Alex and JoAnn Lieblong. He will be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr.
Market King (Into Mischief-Divine Presence) – Owners Robert C. Baker and William L. Mack purchased the Rebel third-place finisher for $550,000 at the 2017 September Sale from the consignment of Lane’s End, agent. Flaxman Holdings Limited bred Market King, who is trained by D. Wayne Lukas and will be ridden by Jon Court.
Owendale (Into Mischief-Aspen Light) – Winner of Keeneland’s Stonestreet Lexington (G3), Owendale was bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, to the 2017 September Sale. John Wentworth purchased the colt for $200,000. Brad Cox trains Owendale, who will be ridden by Florent Geroux for Rupp Racing.
War of Will (War Front-Visions of Clarity [IRE]) – Flaxman Holdings Limited also bred the Risen Star Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) and Lecomte (G3) winner, who races for Gary Barber. War of Will was consigned by Lane’s End, agent, to the 2017 September Sale and was an RNA to Sale. Tyler Gaffalione will ride the colt for trainer Mark Casse.
Fans are invited to Red Mile for simulcast wagering on Pimlico and other major North American race tracks. Friday’s Pimlico card includes the Black-Eyed Susan (G2), Pimlico Special (G3), Adena Springs Miss Preakness (G3) and Allaire duPont Distaff (G3).
Post time for the Black-Eyed Susan is 4:48 p.m. ET.
On Saturday, day of the Preakness (G1), the first post at Pimlico is 10:30 a.m. The undercard includes the Dixie (G2), Chick Lang (G3), Gallorette (G3) and Maryland Sprint (G3).

Advance wagering for the entire Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness Day cards is available at Red Mile beginning Thursday at 12:20 p.m. and also will be available Friday beginning at 11:15 a.m.
