With just a week to go in this summer’s annual soybean festival known as the Ellis Park race meet, Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen seems poised and ready to harvest yet another bumper crop of Trainer Titles.

Going into the final days, Asmussen — who has kept a steady string of horses in Henderson and another set at his home base of Churchill Downs in addition to his Saratoga string — the Texas-native has a 3-win margin over Louisville’s own Brad Cox.

So far, Asmussen has started a whopping 128 horses at this year’s meet at Ellis Park. That’s the same number of horses sent to the gate by the next three leading trainers — Cox (52), Dale Romans (32) and Brendan Walsh (44).

Out of the 128 entries, Asmussen has a record of 19-18-18.

Alone in second, with 16 wins, is Cox. He has a resumer of 16-6-10 in 52 starts. Cox’s horses have won .31% of the time and have hit the board a whopping .62% rate.

Romans is third with 9 wins, 4 seconds and 6 thirds in just 32 starts.
