It has been a long time since Rafael Bejarano rode regularly in Kentucky. Even longer since he was a mainstay at little Ellis Park in rural West Kentucky. Even longer, still, since he won a riding title there. (Like ever?)

But so much for the old saying that you can’t teach an old jockey new tricks. Isn’t that the way it goes?

After Sunday’s races were concluded, Bejarano — who just a year ago was continuing his longstanding tradition of riding consistently, if not exclusively, on the West Coast — is atop of the Ellis Park rider’s standings. And, he is looking good.

In the first 57 rides this meet so far, Bejarano has carved out a record of 12 wins, 6 seconds and 10 thirds. He is winning at a .21% clip, and his horses have finished either first, second or third on .49% of the time.

Not bad for a man that some consider an elder statesman.

Not bad for anybody.

The 12 wins gives Bejarano a 4-win margin over Miguel Mena, who has a a 8-5-4 mark in 53 rides so far. Just a win back, and alone in third, is Corey Lanerie.
