Evelyn Benoit is well known in the Louisiana racing circles. That’s because she has made it a habit to visit winner’s circles. And, this year’s meet at the Fair Grounds, in the heart of New Orleans, is no different.

After Sunday’s races were concluded at the Fair Grounds, Benoit’s Brittlyn Stable, of which she is the primary owner and investor, is leading the top owner in terms of purses won. To date, the Stable has had 42 starters. That has amounted to a win percentage of .17  and the horses have finished in the money on .48% of the time.

Of that group, 7 have won, eight have run second and five have showed. Collectively, they have earned over $382,000 in purses, which is tops at this year’s meet, which is scheduled to close on March 31.

Benoit is well known for her homebred, Star Guitar, who was a four-time Louisiana Horse of the Year and winner of 22 black-type stakes out of 30 starts. Now, he seems to be becoming one of the top stallions in the history of the Cajun breeding game, and is standing the 2018 breeding season at Clear Creek Stud near Folsom, La. for $7,500 live foal.

The second leading owner, in terms of purses earned, is Calumet Farm, who is about $100,000 back at this juncture. But the historic nursery in Lexington, KY. may have a built in advantage trying to close the gap. On March 24, in the Louisiana Derby, Calumet Farm will have one of the race-time favorites in the starting gate in Bravazo.

Bravazo is one of two winners that Calumet has started this meet, and the primary reason why the farm has amassed over $283,000 in purse money. Earlier this meet, the colt — one of the leading contenders now on the “2018 Road to the Kentucky Derby” — won the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes here over Snapper Sinclair.

What I saw of it, I liked a lot. I want them to extend it another 50 yards. He was running on in the end. Luis (Saez) did a good job. A very good horse won the race, a very good horse. We ran at him. We kept him honest just like we said we would. Bob’s tough in these and if he gets the right horse, he’s really tough. But, kudos to him, and we’ll see what happens in the next one.”
