From the Churchill Downs Media Team:

Lothenbach Stables’ speedy Grade I-winning mare Bell’s the One completed her major preparation ahead of next Saturday’s $200,000 Chicago Stakes (GIII) at Churchill Downs with a swift five-furlong move in :59.60 on Saturday morning.

With jockey Corey Lanerie in the saddle, Bell’s the One started about four lengths behind regular breeze partner Grove Daddy and exercise rider KevinAlfMudd. At the head of the lane, Lanerie tipped the 6-year-old Majesticperfection mare to the outside and drew away from Grove Daddy, who completed five furlongs in 1:01.

Bell’s the One has won four of her 11 lifetime starts at Churchill Downs. Her most notable win was in the 2020 Derby City Distaff (GI) where she defeated former Kentucky Oaks heroine Serengeti Empress by a scant nose.

This will be the second time the Chicago Stakes has been run at Churchill Downs. The storied race was previously run at Arlington, the track where Bell’s the One broke her maiden in 2018. The other time the Chicago was run at Churchill Downs was in 2017 when Finley’sluckycharm defeated nine rivals as the heavy 1-5 favorite.

Saturday’s Chicago Stakes is expected to include multiple graded stakes winner Sconsin, Grade III winner Lady Rocket and two-time stakes winner Bayerness.

Entries for the seven-furlong event will be drawn Wednesday.

RUNAWAY ALLAIRE DuPONT DISTAFF WINNER SUPER QUICK WORKS TOWARDS FLEUR DE LISMarylou Whitney Stables’ recent 14 ¼-length Allaire DuPont Distaff (Grade III) winner Super Quick continued her preparation toward the $350,000 Fleur de Lis (GII) on July 2 with a strong five-furlong move in :59.80 Saturday morning at Churchill Downs under jockey Joe Talamo.

The speedy Super Quick didn’t break her maiden until her sixth start but trainer Norm Casse believes her speed is the ultimate weapon going two turns.

“I think when we let her show her natural speed on the front end in route races is where she can separate from a lot of horses,” Casse said. “We let her break fast in the DuPont and she opened up a large margin against the rest of the field.”

Super Quick, a bay 4-year-old filly by Super Saver, is likely to be joined in the Fleur de Lis by Flurry Racing Stables, Qatar Racing Limited and Whisper Hill Farm’s 2020 Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI) winner Shedaresthedevil. The classy 5-year-old mare has not found the winner’s circle since last year’s $400,000 Locust Grove (GIII). Shedaresthedevil worked five furlongs in 1:00.40 just prior to Super Quick’s breeze.

Nominations to the Fleur de Lis closed Saturday and will be posted in the coming days onwww.churchilldowns.com/horsemen.

BEJARANO REFLECTS ON 500 CHURCHILL DOWNS WINSRafael Bejarano became only the 15th rider in Churchill Downs history to record 500 victories beneath the historic Twin Spires when debuting 2-year-old filly Just Cindy prevailed in Friday’s seventh race.

“I’m so happy to be back at Churchill Downs and doing well here,” Bejarano said. “It was always going to be my dream to come back here since I started by career here in 2002. I want to thank all the agents I’ve had in my career and my current agent Julio Espinoza. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities given to me by the owners, trainers and horses.”

Bejarano joined Pat Day (2,482 Churchill Downs wins), Calvin Borel (1,232), Robby Albarado (1,192) and Corey Lanerie (1,172), Julien Leparoux (1,002), Don Brumfield (925), Larry Melancon (914), Jim McKnight (883), Charlie Woods Jr. (757), Brian Hernandez Jr. (740), Shane Sellers (738), Shaun Bridgmohan (728), Julio Espinoza (642) and Jon Court (583) in a select group of jockeys that reached the 500-win milestone at Churchill Downs.

Bejarano, who will turn 40 on Thursday, began riding in his native Peru in 1999. He started riding at Churchill Downs in 2003 and won three local riding titles (2004-05 Spring and 2005 Fall) before moving his tack to California in 2008. He returned to the Kentucky circuit in 2020.

A winner of 61 Grade I races in his career, some of Bejarano’s most prestigious victories at Churchill Downs include the 2010 Longines Kentucky Oaks (Blind Luck); 2010 Old Forester Turf Classic (General Quarters); 2007 Derby City Distaff (Hystericalady); 2020 Clark (Bodexpress); and 2004 Stephen Foster (Colonial Colony).

Just Cindy, trained by Eddie Kenneally, was Bejarano’s 4,281st career win. His more than 21,000 lifetime mounts have amassed more than $217 million in prize money.
