Good day at the ole’ ball yard on Monday. Had 6 winners on the 9-race card and knocked down a few exactas along the way, too.
Here’s hoping we may be able to string together a Pick 6 or a Pick 5 on Tuesday.
Here’s our looks for Tuesday:
1st: 7-3/2-5/6/1…Concrete Charlie (7) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter at “The Shoe” on Tuesday afternoon. This 5YO Indiana-bred son of Run Away and Hide ran here on April 19 and was just 21/2 lengths back that day. Well supported at the windows. Gets the same rider back, and he’s winning at a .21% clip this meet. Trainer has a win and a second in the first 3 outings. Looks like this one could improve here, on the 2nd start with the trainer and the 2nd start off the layup. Barn wins with .11% in the last category. Shipshape (3) looks to be just that after a near-miss 2nd here on April 19. Led most of the way that day and gave it up near the wire. Trainer has won with .16% this year and this gelding has gone 2-2-1 in the 11 previous tries here. Chance. I bet the 7 across the board and then box the 7-3 in the exactas. I will key the 7-3 over/under the 2-5-6 in two smaller units.
2nd: 5-1/9-6/2-3…Go for Sherrie (5) looks the part here, having run three times at Oaklawn Park this winter. Two of those tries were in the money and against better. Returns as a beaten favorite in this spot, and the barn wins with .16% of those kind. Has 3 wins in 8 tries at this distance. Rider has won with .15% in the last 27 mounts for this trainer. Can’tbetemall (1) has not been worse than 2nd in the last 5 outings and has three wins in that mix, too. Only previous run here was a winning one. Will need to break a little cleaner than normal with the rail post. Comes from the back, though. Interesting here. I bet the 5-1 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 5-1 over/under the rest of the numbers listed n two smaller units.
3rd: 2-7-3/5-6/1-4…Dulcimer Dame (2) has hit the board in each of the last 4 outings and 5 of the last 6. This one has a win and 2 2nds in 3 starts here before. Should be primed for this one. Look out. Destiny’s Darling (7) won the last time out and that was here on April 27. In 6 starts here now, this one has 3 wins and a 3rd on the resume. Looks to be another who will close late. Gets the meet’s top rider up. I bet the 7 — take note — across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 5-6 in two smaller units.
4th: 4/8/1-5-7/2/3-6-9…The first “Key Play of the Day” comes here with Too Bad Justice (4), who is the 6-5 ML favorite. Returns as a beaten favorite here and has run 4 straight 2nds to start the career. If you want to play it safe? Play this one to “Place.” Could be a 5th in a row. But I will take here on top. I bet the 4 to win/place and then box the 4 strongly and sternly with the 8. I will key the 4 over (only) the 8-1-5-7-2 in a smaller unit.
5th: 5-7-3/1-8-9/(10)-(11)/4/2-6…Kentucky Pharoah (5) gets my nod in the first grass race of the day. This 4YO son of the Triple Crown winner comes in off an extended layoff. Has not raced since July of 2021. Was in a Stakes then at Saratoga. Ran poorly and then put to bed for the rest of the year. Training very, very well for this return, though, and has the class to be very tough. Won a Stakes at Gulfstream Park early last year. Mutakatif (7) is a 7YO now, but does have 3 wins in 18 previous sod starts. Has a 2nd in only previous try over this course. Ran huge to be 3rd to starts ago at the Fair Grounds. Chance. Artie’s Rumor (3) could upset this field, as well. Has raced here 9 times previously and has a record of 2-1-2. Won two starts ago, when he was claimed by George Leonard III. I bet the 5 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the 5 over/under the 7-3-1-8-9-4 in two smaller units.
6th: 3/4-7-1/6/2-9/5-8…The next “Key Play of the Day” comes here with Maker’s Please (3). This 3YO Indiana-bred son of Pass Rush goes for the Swifty Farms ownership group. Comes in off a terrific 2nd in the career debut here on April 19. Should be fitter from that exercise and the “Show” horse has already returned to win. Look out here. I bet the 3 to win/place/show and then key the 3 over/under the 4-7-1-6-2-9 in the exactas. More with the 4-7-1 than the rest.
7th: 1-6/3-11/4-7-5/2-9/10-12…This is a 5-furlong turf sprint challenge and I will go to the rail and ante up with Queen in the North (1). This 3YO filly has a ton of speed and she will need to use it early and often to hold her location and get a decent jump on the field. Rider returns from a front-running 2nd last time out. Gave it up at the wire, to lose by a nose. Barn wins with .23% of those returning off a layoff. And, this trainer won here on Monday. Look out. Honor That (6) has a 2nd on the grass at Tampa Bay back in March. That exercise should have tightened the screws a bit. Will be coming from a stalking position and may have the best of the runs. I bet the 1 across the board and then box the 1-6 in the exactas. I will key the 1-6 over/under the 3-11-4-7-5 in two smaller units.
8th: 12/8-5-3-6-(13)/1-10-7/9-11…The next “Key Play of the Day” comes here with the Cherie DeVaux-trained filly Missoni (12). This gal ran a huge one at the Fair Grounds back in December. Was off after that and returned in March in New Orleans and ran a solid 5th in that one as the beaten favorite. Drops in class here and the barn wins with .13% with shippers. Barn wins with .14% with turf starts. Working very well. Look out here. I bet the 12 to win/place/show. I key the 12 over/under the 8-5-3-6-13-1 in the exactas. More with the 8-5-3.
9th: 3-2-1/8/7-6/4/5…Gaon Flag (3) ran a good one here on April 19 to be 3rd. Came from far back to get up late. Gets a new rider here and this one could be a tough out when moving to the sod for the first time. Work on May 3 at KEE was spot on. Classic King (2) goes for a barn that does very well here and is off to a great start. Has won with .24% with the first 29 starters. Rider has won with 3 of 9 for this barn in the last two weeks. Not without a chance. Go Emi (1) will make the first start of 2022 and this son of Lord Nelson comes with some kick in the sprint pedigree. Winner of the first race here last November came back to win again. I bet the 3-2 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 8 in two smaller units.
10th: 1-6-8/2-4/7-9-10/3-5…The Quarter Horse speed race looks to be wide, wide open. I give the slight edge to the rail horse, but this is a difficult start spot for this quicksteps. This Lovers Leavin (1) goes for a top QH trainer, though, and he won the QH event here on Monday. This one ran huge in the slop last June in his last start. Working great for this one. Jettin to Midnight (6) has not gotten the job done yet after the first 7 starts, but never seems too far out of it either. One of these days? Jess Go Blue (8) is another trained by Randy Smith and is a whopping 12-1 in the ML. Could be and is our first “Upset Special of the Day.” Has experience and breaks from the middle of this pack. Clean start could definitely help this one, who is training very well, too. I bet the 1-8 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 2-4 in two smaller units.
