Editor’s Note:

Since this is supposed to be one of the hottest days of the year, and racetracks have closed operations all across the country for the protection of both horse and person, we thought it appropriate to offer you up some of our favorite, most “cool” photos of the year, so far.

Some of the “body shots” are from our very own Holly M. Smith — one of the best in the business. Some are from your’s truly, who is not. But we thought you may enjoy a refreshing look at the horses, while the sun bakes.

Here you go:

But not to worry about the heat today. What is here today is surely gone tomorrow. Especially in Kentucky.

Soon, it will be November. And, remember. When the wind blows, far beneath the snow, there’s a seed that with the sun’s glow will soon become another Derby rose. To paraphrase the great song, in my best Gene McLean way.
