Corey Lanerie is good. Really good.  Maybe, this meeting at Churchill Downs, he is really, really good.

The talented rider has been so good, in fact, that he has doubled up on his second leading competitor, Julie Leparoux, for this Fall’s riding title. And, to be honest, it really, really isn’t even that close.

Going into Wednesday’s card, Lanerie has ridden in 123 races, and so far he has amassed 28 wins, 18 seconds and 14 thirds for a win percentage of .23% and finishes in the top three spots at .49%.  All told, he has earned over $1,071,000 in purses for his trainers and owners.

If that isn’t impressive in its’ own right, just consider that the second leading rider, Leparoux, has 14 wins, 6 seconds and 9 thirds in just 49 rides for a total of $591,964 in purses.  That equals out to about half of what Lanerie has been able to post to date.

Third in the standings is Richardo Santana, Jr., who rides first saddle for trainer Steve Asmussen, who is in a tussle for the leading trainer’s title here this meet. Santana has 13 wins, 12 seconds and 11 thirds with $575,022 in purses won after 83 rides.
