(Brad Cox)

He trains all types of horses. Grass runners. Dirt runners. Routers. Sprinters. Fillies and Mares. Colts and geldings. Former claimers, who have found a new life. Older guys working their way down to retirement. Youngsters with promise.

But Brad Cox is a sprinter, for sure. And, he has suddenly sprinted out to a commanding lead in the race for the Trainer’s Title at the current meeting being conducted at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

After Sunday’s action, Brad Cox has saddled 85 horses during the current meet, which will run through March of this year. To date he has met them back at the winner’s circle on 25 occasions, with 11 seconds and 14 thirds.

All told, his horses have already amassed over $745,000 in purses.

To put that into perspective, just consider:

  1. The closest trainer in terms of wins is Kentucky-bred Joe Sharp, who has 22 wins, 15 seconds and 15 thirds in 91 starts this meet. But he is $235,000 behind in purses earned.
  2. Al Stall, Jr., a lynchpin of this meet for years, is second in purses earned with $662,196 in earnings to date. But he is nine wins short of Cox, with a record of 16-15-7 in 76 starts.
  3. Stuck in-between is Michael Stidham, who has 16 wins, 11 seconds and 8 thirds in 72 starts and has earned $567,945 in purses.
  4. And, Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen — who has been the talk of the meet what with all his standout prospects for the Triple Crown trail and prepping the great Gun Runner in New Orleans for his last race before stud duty — has only stockpiled 9 winners so far out of 78 mounts.

So far, Brad Cox has stamped his brand all over the place, and it doesn’t appear that the guy from Louisville is planning on slow down. Here is a closer look at the Top 25 in the Trainer’s Standings
