Dave Welch Makes His Picks For ‘Thurby’ At Churchill Downs

It’s a dreary day at Churchill Downs for what Louisvillians call “Thurby,” but the racing is still on! Here are Dave Welch’s picks for some of the late Thurby races at Churchill Downs.

Race 8: 10-4-3

Churchill Downs

I give the very slight

edge to the 10, Blaz’n Prospector, over the 4, Luna de Loco. Sharp Art, the 3, has a s

hot in this one as well. You’d be smart to bet any of these three across the board.

Race 9: 4-2-6-8

Black Sea, the French import trained by Chad Brown, looks strong here. If you’re feeling adventurous, bet an exacta part wheel 4 with the 2, the 6 and the 8.

Race 11: 3-4-5-9

Ian Wilkes’s first-time turfer, Pauline Revere, is the pick here. 4, 5 and 9 are Pauline Revere’s top challengers.

Good luck on Thurby!

They (Gun Runner and workmate Gettysburg) worked head-and-head last week, and this week we chose to back him off Gettysburg early and just let him settle. I thought he handled it really nicely and galloped out really good. It wasn’t as intense of a work as last week, and I feel good about it…. He was probably two or three (lengths) off of Gettysburg away from the pole, engaged him probably by the three-eighths pole and Gettysburg carried him to almost the sixteenth pole.
