Dave Welch Makes His Picks For ‘Thurby’ At Churchill Downs

It’s a dreary day at Churchill Downs for what Louisvillians call “Thurby,” but the racing is still on! Here are Dave Welch’s picks for some of the late Thurby races at Churchill Downs.

Race 8: 10-4-3

Churchill Downs

I give the very slight

edge to the 10, Blaz’n Prospector, over the 4, Luna de Loco. Sharp Art, the 3, has a s

hot in this one as well. You’d be smart to bet any of these three across the board.

Race 9: 4-2-6-8

Black Sea, the French import trained by Chad Brown, looks strong here. If you’re feeling adventurous, bet an exacta part wheel 4 with the 2, the 6 and the 8.

Race 11: 3-4-5-9

Ian Wilkes’s first-time turfer, Pauline Revere, is the pick here. 4, 5 and 9 are Pauline Revere’s top challengers.

Good luck on Thurby!

I’m not going to get spiritual about this thing, but I’ll tell you this – I really felt Mr. Benson was with us today. This guy reminds me a lot of Mylute, who came from off the pace and just got beat a neck in the Louisiana Derby and that’s what happened to day with Lone Sailor. We’ve got the points now. I know the group wants to go to the Kentucky Derby and I stand behind that as well so if he’s happy then we’re going to go.
