(I join commentator Ed DeRosa in the Churchill Downs paddock before a race, back when DeRosa had a real job. Unfortunately, his picks were so dismal that he was soon replaced on the in-house telecast. Ugh…)

DeRosa vs McLean…Head to Head Competition This Entire Churchill Downs September Meet

This September, HorseRacingNation.com’s Content Editor and chief guru, Ed DeRosa, and I will embark on a fun-filled experiment when we take on one race per day at Churchill Downs and go “head-to-head” in our handicapping challenge.

On Friday afternoon, Eduardo drilled “your’s truly family handicapper.” After all, it is a bit hard to win when your “pick” scratches before the race. Ugh.

Eduardo, on the other hand, didn’t necessarily kick my buttocks. His top pick — the deuce in the 8th race — ran like he needed to take one. He finished a convincing 4th out of the condensed field.

So, after Day 1, let the record reflect it is:

McLean 1, DeRosa 1.

Now, we are ready for Round 3, and Eduardo has selected the G3 Pocahontas Stakes as our feature in today’s  “Head-to-Head” matchup…Let the games begin…Again

Ed DeRosa’s Selections:

6-1-7…

V V’s Dream (6) is my best bet of the day anywhere. She’s the fastest of these and figures to be the right price.

McLean’s Selections:

7-9-6…

Youalmosthadme (7) should return to the winning ways here, IMO. This 2YO daughter of Oxbow ran 3rd in the Debutante at Ellis Park last time out, but that race was an absolute debacle. She stumbled at the gate. Had to chase 4 wide for much of the 7-furlongs. And, just could not close enough on a speed favoring surface. Shows back up here as a beaten, odds-on favorite and against a good group. But if she gets away clear and clean. Gone. Long.
