Stats Updated After Thursday’s “Twilight Racing” Card at Churchill Downs

Here’s our looks for Friday Fun-day at the big oval in Louisville:

st: 6-2/1-5/4-3…Stavanger (6) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter at the “big oval” in Louisville on this Friday Funday afternoon. The 3YO gelded son of Street Sense was claimed last time out when he was miserable at KEE on April 24. Has been off since then and the connections are hoping they can get him back to the spot where he ran 2nd here last November in a $50,000 event. Will drop to the $10,000 level here. Barn can get them ready off the bench. Rider is 0-for-19 this meet, but has talent. Not the toughest bunch ever assembled. Fotheringay (2) will make the 2nd start for an all-start barn operator and talented trainer. Was claimed just two back for this same level. Spit the bit last time out. But the barn knows how to win races and this one could improve here. I bet the 6-2 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 6-2 over/under the 1-5-4-3 in two smaller units.

nd: 3-7/2-6/4/1-5…Mejthaam (3) has run two good ones in a row and now moves up a couple of notches in the claiming ranks. Does come from downtown and way back. If she can get a clean trip and find a little room? Could be right there at the wire. Chopin Drive (7) was claimed last time out when 3rd. Moves up a few notches here for a barn that wins with .20% of those on the club. Rider is finding Kentucky is a tough go, but this one had a sharp work on June 18. Chance. I bet the 3-7 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 3-7 over/under the 2-6-4 in two smaller units.

rd: 5-4/3-2-8-1/6/7…Earley Rose (5) gets the checkmark here. This one drops in class and has a win in two previous tries here. Rider has teamed up with this barn operation to go 2-1-0 in the last 5. Barn wins with .24% in the claiming ranks, too. Choice for me. Epsom Gratus (4) goes for a highly under-rated trainer. Has won with .23% with limited runners this meet, but they make the trip over to the paddock ready to go. This one drops in class and comes off a sloppy track run. Look out here. I bet the 5-4 across the board and then box those two in the exactas. I will key the 5-4 over/under the 3-2-8-1-6 in two smaller units.

th: 5-4-1/2/3…High Fashion (5) has run here 6 times and has 3 seconds and a third. May like to hang a bit, but if she can get over that habit? Look out here. Rider has gone 7-6-0 in the last 27 starts. Nice. Designer Ready (4) is a daughter of the grand sire Tapit and she could add to the resume and the upcoming breeding career with a win here. Ran 4th last time out over the slop, which may not be here best surface. Look for more here. Good Measure (1) has a shot here, too. This one was 2nd in the slop last time and that was when she was sent off at odds of 21-1. Has hit the board in each of the last 4, though, and looks like she will be coming late. I bet the 5-4 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 over/under the 2 in two smaller units.

th: 4-6-3/5/2-7/1…Well Spent (4) looks the best in this spot and I can toss the last two with this significant drop in class. When entered for $32,000 before — at Oaklawn Park in December — this gal won impressively. Has worked well for this one. Trainer wins with .24% in the claiming ranks with the last 1,647 to make the gate. Cherished (6) will make her Churchill Downs debut here. Ran well at Oaklawn Park over the winter and should fit nicely with this group here. Get’s the meet’s top rider in the saddle for the first time. Big change here. Off We Go (3) drops in class and has a 2nd and a 3rd in two previous tries here. At this distance, has 2 wins in 8 starts. Should improve with the return to the dirt, where she is much better, it appears. I bet the 4-6 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 over/under the 5 in two smaller units.

th: 8/3-6-7/1-4/5/2…Shared Future (8) is the first “Key Play of the Day.” This 3YO daughter of Twirling Candy drops in class for the first time into the claiming ranks. Should fit very well here. Class connections. Look out here. I bet the 8 across the board and then key the 8 over/under the 3-6-7-1-4 in the exactas. More with the 3-6-7 than the rest.

th: 7-6/4/3-5/1/2…Pioneering Spirit (7) nearly broke the MSW last time out when 2nd as the beaten favorite. Barn wins with .27% of those kind on the return and this one was beaten just 11/2 lengths by Creative Minister, who ran 3rd in this year’s Preakness Stakes. Tough race, but I ante up here. Speed Bias (6) actually won the last time out, but was DQ’d after that one. Same rider returns and this one has the talent to become a winner — again. Sharp work on June 18. Looks ready for the return off a vacation. I bet the 7 across the board and then hammer lock the exacta with the 7-6. Use the 7-6 over the 4 in a smaller unit.

th: 8-5/4-2-6/1/7-1A/3…Thrive (8) is a California-bred who will make his first start of the career East of the Mississippi. Has been training well for a barn operation that is kicking butt and taking names. Trainer has gone 3-2-1 in the first 11 starts here. Picks up a top rider on the grounds, too. Look out here. Mahomey (5) is an Arkansas-bred who ran a very nice 2nd here last time out on June 4. Nice works here. Barn is having a nice meet, as well. I bet the 8 across the board and then box the 8-5 in the exactas. I will key the 8-5 over/under the 4-2-6-1 in two smaller units.

th: 7/1-6-9-10/2-8-11/4-5…The final race of the day and the last “Key Play of the Day,” as well. The top horse here is Chrome’s Right (7). This 3YO son of KY Derby winner California Chrome was claimed last time out when he was 3rd here on June 2. Bumps up in class here for a barn that wins with .15% on the first start after the purchase. Gets a good gate and speed rider for the journey. Has speed. Will travel. Maybe he holds on this time. I bet the 7 across the board and then key the 7 over/under the 1-6-9-10-2-8-11 in the exactas.
