Brian Joseph Hernandez has long been a riding favorite for some trainers like Neil Howard, and Ian Wilkes. Over the past year or so, other top trainers on the Kentucky circuit — like Kenny McPeek — have learned to love him and his talents, too.

And, there’s a good reason.

The man can ride.

After Sunday’s races were concluded, Hernandez was standing tall in the saddle and in the standings, with a meet-leading 16 wins. After his first 60 mounts this meet, Hernandez has stockpiled an impressive record of 16-3-9 and his horses have totaled  over $690,000 in purse earnings.

That amounts to a win percentage of a stellar .27%, and his horses have finished either first, second or third on .47% of the time.

That gives Hernandez a three-win lead over perennial riding champ Corey Lanerie, who finished up the weekend with a solid record of 13-14-12 in 71 mounts to date. His horses have won on .18% of the time, but have hit the board 55%. His horse have amassed over $621,000 in purses earned.

Mike Smith, the rider on Kentucky Derby winner Justify, has only one win this meet, but leads the purses category with $1,551,325.
