Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale Begins Monday

LEXINGTON, KY (Nov. 2, 2018) – Keeneland’s 2018 November Breeding Stock Sale, the largest and most important sale of its kind in the world, opens its 12-day run Monday at noon ET with an exclusive Book 1 session featuring 251 graded stakes-winning and stakes-producing fillies and mares and notable weanlings. Throughout the sale are a number of horses with connections to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships being held today and tomorrow at Churchill Downs.

The 4,513 horses cataloged to the entire sale, which runs through Friday, Nov. 16, include 2,259 broodmares and racing or broodmare prospects, 1,789 weanlings, 454 horses of racing age and 11 stallions. The sale also includes the dispersal of Edward A. Cox Jr., Claiborne Farm agent, which has cataloged 22 horses, including broodmares and weanlings.

Book 1 includes such highly prized offerings as champion Lady Eli, bred to War Front for her first foal; Grade 1 winner Zipessa, bred to Medaglia d’Oro for her first foal; and these Grade 1 winners cataloged as racing or broodmare prospects: Lady Ivanka, Sailor’s Valentine, Union Strike and Vasilika.

Weanlings cataloged in Book 1 include a Tapit filly out of champion La Verdad and weanling half-sisters of champion and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Arrogate and champion Honor Code.

Keeneland will stream the entire November sale live on

TVG will present live coverage of the first five sessions of the sale.

Books 2-7, which begin with the second session on Tuesday, Nov. 6, and run through the 12th session on Friday, Nov. 16, begin at 10 a.m.

Horses of racing age highlight sessions on Monday, Nov. 12, and Tuesday, Nov. 13. Consignors include Lane’s End, WinStar Farm, Taylor Made Sales Agency and ELiTE.


Among the 2018 graded stakes winners sold as horses of racing age during the November Sale are Whitney (G1) and Suburban (G2) winner Diversify, Highlander (G1) winner Long On Value and Leofric, recent winner of Keeneland’s Hagyard Fayette (G2).

Broodmares cataloged to the November Sale are in foal to 212 proven sires and exciting newcomers, while weanlings in the catalog represent 190 stallions.

The auction will offer the first mares in foal to Horse of the Year Gun Runner; champions Arrogate and Classic Empire; and American Freedom, Astern (AUS), Keen Ice, Lord Nelson, Mastery, Midnight Storm, Mohaymen, Practical Joke and Shaman Ghost.

Other covering sires include American Pharoah, California Chrome, Candy Ride (ARG), Curlin, Empire Maker, Ghostzapper, Into Mischief, Kitten’s Joy, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, Quality Road, Speightstown, Tapit, Uncle Mo, Union Rags and War Front.

California Chrome, the two-time Horse of the Year, is among the sires represented by their first crop of weanlings. Others include champion and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist, champion Runhappy, Air Force Blue, Anchor Down, Brody’s Cause, Exaggerator, Flintshire (GB), Frosted, Not This Time, Speightster, Upstart and Vancouver (AUS).

Additional sires of weanlings include American Pharoah, Bernardini, Candy Ride (ARG), Curlin, Empire Maker, Ghostzapper, Giant’s Causeway, Into Mischief, Kitten’s Joy, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, Quality Road, Speightstown, Tapit, Uncle Mo, Union Rags and War Front.

The horse broke well today,” Gaffalione said. “I had the horse inside, Dunph, going to the lead and then (Gun It) showed a little bit of speed. When I saw they were intent on going I just tried to get him back and got him to relax. He came back to me nicely and settled well down the backside. Got a little keen going into the far turn and wanted to move a little early. But I didn’t want to take too much away from him so I tried to sit as long as I could. He was waiting on horses down the lane but I kept him at task and there was plenty of horse there.”

“Mark (Casse, the trainer) and his team have done a great job,” Gaffalione said. “They’ve had a ton of confidence in this horse the whole way. It’s just an honor to be able to ride the horse. He’s just so professional, trains great and he’s a pleasure to be around.”
