From the Churchill Downs Media Team:
Michael and Deborah Rouser’s 5-year-old homebred mare Lessons From Avery sprung a major upset in Sunday’s $74,488 feature race at Churchill Downs when she flew late to run down Art of Almost by three-quarters of a length at odds of 73-1.
Lessons From Avery paid $149.20 to win. Rafael Bejarano rode the winner for trainer Charlie LoPresti.
The daughter of Lookin at Lucky was last in the field of 12 fillies and mares after a half-mile in the 1 1/8-mile turf event but closed with a late rush to stop the clock in 1:49.39. Art of Almost finished a head in front of 2-1 favorite Chaleur (GB). Room to Finish was another 1 ½ lengths back in fourth after lacking room to finish late.
Lessons From Avery won for the third time in her 16-race career and the $47,720 first prize increased the Kentucky-bred’s earnings to $170,824.
There was one winning ticket in Sunday’s Single 6 and the Jackpot wager paid a whopping $223,803 to an advance deposit wagering customer through the Oregon hub.
Betting at Churchill Downs on Sunday totaled $11,580,323.
