We start a new week of Thoroughbred racing action at Turfway Park tonight, and we are gearing up. The calendar is about ready to turn to March. The “March to the KY Derby” begins in earnest in March (well, due to Leap Year, on Feb. 29). It’s time to rev up the horse power and start all engines.
And, we are ready.
Ready to rock.
Ready to roll.
Ready to win.
Here’s a look at tonight’s card at Turfway Park:
1st: 9/10-5/8-6/1-12-4…The first Key Play of the Night comes in the very first race with Uncle Earl (9). This 3YO gelded son of Summer Front nearly won on racing debut here on Dec. 28 at this level. Came with a nice run late and just missed at the wire. Rider returns and he has won with .44% of the 16 rides for this barn this meet. Trainer has a 19-8-10 record in 55 starts here this meet, too. Odds won’t be much, but this one looks to be a standout in this group. By many. I be the 9 to win/place and then key the 9 over/under the “all button.” I will key the 9 over the 10-5-8-6 in a smaller version, too.
2nd: 4-8/1-3/9-10-5/6-11-7…Tarnish (4) will move up to face winners for the first time after breaking the maiden here at the $7,500 claiming level last time out on Dec. 21. Came from the absolute clouds to catch the wire first by a neck. Impressive move in the lane that night. Has been away from the races since. Barn is warming up right now. Combined with the rider to go 2-2-0 in the last 5 races. Look for more out of this outfit as we get closer to Spring, too. Barn wins with .15% of those moving up to face winners for the first time, as well. Dusty Miller (8) broke the maiden here two starts back and ran OK in the last race. Pushed the pace in that one and tattered late. Drops in class for this one. Same price tag, but that last race was against horses that had never won 3 lifetime. This is a much easier spot than that one. Look for this one to be a tough out here. I bet the 4-8 across the board and then box those two in the exacta. I will key the 4-8 over/under the 1-3-9-10-5-6 in two smaller versions.
3rd: 12-3/(14)-2-5-7/8…Girls Got Track (12) ran well here two starts ago and then faced a tougher bunch the last time out on Feb. 1. Pushed hard on the front end and has speed to dictate the early going. Has to figure out a way to last at the wire. Gets her 2nd career start for the new barn, who claimed her two starts ago. Back to that same level tonight. Rider has a win in 3 tries for this barn this meet and this gal has the pedigree to love the AW. Dangerous. Social Circle (3) won easily last time out, but loses that condition and moves up the pecking order. Barn has had a solid meet from the get-go. And, this 4YO daughter of Stay Thirsty does have a win and a third in 3 tries over this surface. Rider suits this one well. Will be coming in the late going. Dangerous, too. I bet the 12-3 across the board and then box those 2 in the exacta. I will key the 12-3 over/under the rest of the numbers listed.
4th: 3-11/10-2/6-9/7…Man of Blues (3) is the prohibitive favorite in the ML, and should be. This 7YO gelded son of Ghostzapper is coming in off two nice runs here and has hit the board in 6 of the last 7 races. Two wins and 3 seconds in that mix. Has a 2-2-3 mark in 13 starts here, too. Barn is 1-2-2 in just 10 starts this meet and picks up a solid rider who fits this horse well. This one will be the one to catch. If they can. Not So Quiet Man (11) is dropping to the bargain basement for this one. Ran against much, much tougher last time out and the NY-bred has some back class to him. But it has been awhile — since last September — that he managed to hit the board. Just one 3rd in the last 9 races. Should like this company better, but has to be better. I bet the 3 to win/place/show and then key the 3 over/under the “all button.”
5th: 12/4-5-9-2/(13)-3-7/8-(14)…Postimpressionist (12) ran well here against tougher last time out on Jan. 30. Made the lead and gutted it out to the wire for a nice second. Makes the 2nd start for the new barn operator tonight and the 2nd start off a layup, too. Has the speed to take control from the get-go and they will have to try to catch her late — if they can. My second Key Play of the Night. Love the work here prior to the last race, too. Looks solid right now against this group. I bet the 12 to win/place/show and then key the 12 over/under the 4-5-9-2-(13)-3-7 in the exactas. I key the 12 over/under the “all button” in two smaller versions.
6th: 4-6/5-7/2-3/1-8-9/10-11…This is a wide, wide open affair with the top 6 numbers all close enough to make them a serious contender in this group. I will give a slight edge to my top 2 numbers, though, led by Yondering (4). This 6YO gelded son of Medaglia d’Oro comes in off a 6th place finish here against these types last time out on Jan. 9. Never a threat in that one, but it was his first effort over the AW surface. Before that one, he had been off since February of 2019. Eleven months on the shelf. That race had to help and the barn hits with .27% of those that return as a beaten favorite. Has faced better in his life and gets the meet’s top rider in the irons. Look for improvement here at some solid odds, too. Statesboro (6) has raced twice over this surface and has done well in each. Ran a nice 3rd her on Jan. 9 in the same race as our top pick. Nearly won when coming late, but he got stuck on the wrong lead in the final stages. Dead-heated for the show. Barn is having a super meet, winning at .27% of the 33 starts. Seems to like the AW surface better. I bet the 4-6 across the board and then box those two in the exacta. I will key the 4-6 over/under the 5-7-2-3-1-8-9 in two smaller versions.
7th: 9-5-1/3-8-6/4/7-2…What a nice allowance race and a fine grouping of fillies and mares have been assembled. I will give the slight edge to Bingwa (9), despite the fact that the 4YO daughter of Goldencents has not raced since last May. In 4 career starts to date, though, she has never been worse than 2nd. Has 2 wins in the resume, as well. Has been training well for the return over this track. Look for this one to gas it right from the get-go and set the standards with the meet’s top rider in the irons. Take Charge Angel (5) is coming off a layup, too. Raced last in October at KEE, where she nearly won a $100,000 allowance event. Ran 5th to Covfefe in the Dogwood Stakes last year, too. Has the talent to be sure, if she is fit enough. Barn hits with .14% coming off this kind of a layup. Dangerous type. Ruby Trust (1) won here by 12 lengths in December, before she was shipped South. Made her next start in the Pan Zareta Stakes at the Fair Grounds, and mowed the lawn good enough to be 3rd. Faced some real good ones in that sprint. Didn’t care for the going at Oaklawn Park in the last out and now returns home. Look out. I bet the 9-5 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the top 3 over/under the 3-8 in two smaller versions.
8th: (14)-4/2-5-8/(13)-11-6-7/9…If somehow, miraculously, Mister Carson (14) draws in from the AE List to make this field, the 3YO son of To Honor and Serve will get my top pick and attention. Ran very well here last time out and just missed at the wire. Seems to have gotten much better with the addition of blinkers and fits this price point, too. If not, I will go with Bronze Medal (4). The name would suggest that you bet this one to show, but the 3YO son of Medal Count has faced much tougher in the first two starts and gets a huge class drop from a barn that is having a super nice meet — winning with .22% of the first 37 starters. Goes from the MSW level all the way to a $7,500 price tag here. Should love the drop in class. But needs to find a way to break just a bit better from the gate. Gets a new rider tonight, and this jockey does have a win for this barn in four rides so far. I bet the 14 if he draws in. If not, I will go with the 4 to win/place/show. I will key the 14-4 over/under the rest of the numbers in the exactas.
