Here’s some “bonus coverage” on our Handicapping for Saturday, March 20 — featuring Louisiana Derby Day at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.
Here’s our looks:
Race 2: 7-1-4/2-5/6-3…
Race 4: 8-1-4/2-6/3-9…
Race 5: 5-6/2-3-4/7-8-9…
Race 6: 8/1-4/5-6/9-7/4…
Race 7: 5-3-6/8-9-10/1-7/2…
Race 8: 2/6-8-5-4/12-14/3-9-7…Costa Rising Stakes…First “Key Play of the Day” is No Parole (2), who will be making the turf debut here. This one is a G1 winner facing other LA-breds only. Has the advantage of speed and class. Job done.
Race 9: 2-7/1-3-4/9-12/10-11…Crescent City Derby…Looks like a 2-horse showdown to me — with Who Took the Money (2) and Unanimously (7) in the mix. I am going with the latter and box sternly with the 2. I will key the 7 over/under the “All Button” in two smaller units.
Race 10: 3-5-8/11-1-6-10/2-1-4…Tom Benson Memorial Stakes…Dalika (3) figures to be the horse to beat, since the 5YO mare is coming off a win here in the Al Stall Memorial Stakes. But my “Upset Special of the Day” is Winter Sunset (5), who is 20-1 in the ML. This one is a perfect 2-for-2 here over this course and is working lights out. Coming off a layup, but can win off this bench. Watch out.
Race 11: 2-1-8/4-5/3-6/7…G2 New Orleans Classic…Owendale (2) should run much better this time around after a very troubled 3rd in the Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park. That was over the slop, and this one never really got his footing that day. Much better effort expected today. But don’t dismiss Roadster (1). Quality individual coming off a year layup, but comes from Team Baffert. Training well. Aggressively placed. May not be a surprise, but could surprise. Watch out.
Race 12: 4-5-1/12-6-8/9-11-3/2-10…G2 Muniz Memorial Stakes…I’m going with a bit of an upset here with Cross Border (4). Went way wide last time out in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational — the entire way. Time before — when here — ran a very nice 2nd and was beaten just a head. Gets a good rider choice here, and if he can carve out a good trip? Watch out.
Race 13: 8-6/4-1/3-2-5…G2 Fair Grounds Oaks…This prep for the KY Oaks has become the leading race going into the best 3YO fillies race in the world. Has produced the likes of Monomoy Girl and Serengeti Empress and the winner last year? Well, how about Shedaresthedevil. Not bad. I love Travel Column (8) here. Had a horrendous trip last time out in the G2 Rachel Alexandra. Has a win and a second against our 2nd pick. Should be a great showdown again. But I will def use the 4-1 under over the 8, as well.
Race 14: 6/4-5-1-3/7-8/2…G2 Louisiana Derby…This is my final Key Play of the Day” — Mandaloun (6). Whenever the trainer — especially this very successful trainer — says that his horse has been training “phenomenally,” then it is time to put the pen away and listen. This horse got the blinkers last time out and ran lights out. Has been even better since that win. Look for a power move today. Power. Move.
