The Del Mar Pick 6 Jackpot is likely to attract a lot of attention and money this afternoon — including mine.  I take a try.  Here are my selections for Del Mar today — Wednesday, Aug. 2:

1st: 5-1-7-3-2-4…My Perfect Gem (5) is a first time gelding after nearly getting to the circle in his first career effort back in June.  Has been training well and gets a drop in class, too.  Anything close to his last effort should be good enough in here.  Inhibition (1) looks to be a lifetime maiden, with only 1 second and 1 third in 12 lifetime starts.  But gets a plunge to his lowest level yet.  Should move him up.  Malibu d’Oro (7) was nominated to the Triple Crown series and now finds himself in a MC20 event — again.  I bet the 5 to win/place and then box the 5-1-7 in one exacta and then key the 5-1-7 over/under the 3-2-4.

2nd: 1-2-4-6-5…Small Town Hero (1) goes for TVG analyst and trainer Ron Ellis. Drops in class today and if he evades the trouble that he had in the last one, he could return to form and contention.  Ucanthankmelater (2) is a true closer who went North to try a Stakes in the last.  Finds an easier spot in here.  Spanish Eyes (4) goes for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and could be dangerous off a layoff.  I bet the 1 to win/place and then box the top 3.

3rd: 7-1-9-8-4…Starts the Pick 6 and is a tough one to pin down, especially with the 9 drawing into the race (despite TVG’s claims that none of the AE’s made it in).  I use the top three numbers in this leg, with Desert Domination (7) getting the edge with trainer Peter Miller and jock Flavien Prat.  Don’t dismiss Silver Fury (9).  This one has trained well for a trainer that can get them ready off the bench.  Bombardeo (1) is another firster who is training well.  I bet the 7-9 to win/place and then key them both over/under the 1-8-4. Pick 6 ticket (at $2): 7-1-9/3-6-4/6-7-5/3-5/8/10 = $108 ticket…Worth a shot, right? We will see.

4th: 3-6-4-2-1-7…Thorpe d’Oro (3) comes off two very fine efforts at low odds.  Speed does burn sometimes and that caught up with this one in the last.  Should be better for that effort, though, and could be very tough in here.  Deal With It Due (6) ran against Pavel in his last and that one ran in the G1 Haskell on Sunday off that win.  I have to use. Ziconic (4) ran a close up third to Arrogate last summer when that one broke his maiden.  Spotty since then, but should be good enough to run well in this spot. I bet the 3 to win/place and then box the 3-6-2 in one exacta and key over (only) the 3-6-4 over the 2-1-7.

5th: 6-7-5-1-4…Sheeza Milky Way (6) is a true closer who will need some racing luck in here, but is coming out of a Stakes event where she was in the mix a bit.  Belvoir Bay (7) will try to gas it from the gate and gets a big jock change to Prat.  I have to use.  Bellamentary (5) took on Bendable in a Stakes event in her last, too.  Needed the last two efforts off a layoff. I bet the 6 to win/place and then box the top three in the exacta.

6th: 3-5-4-8-6…Settle Down Eileen (3) gets another class drop and should benefit from the relief.  Goes for a little known trainer, but a well known rider.  Jeweled (5) is Bob Baffert’s entry and gets the drop from MSW.  His numbers are really not all that good with this drop.  Vegastruck (4) comes out of the MSW ranks, too.  Has a shot if she can maintain her speed.  I bet the 3 to win/place and then box the top 3 in the exacta.

7th: 8-9-3-5-2-1…I go to Kimberlea K (8) for the single that I desperately need in the Pick 6.  She is 2-for-2 and comes out of a small, Cal-bred Stakes win for a barn that is one of the best in the biz.  Family Girl flashed a blow out win in her career debut for Peter Miller and Gorgeous Ginny has class, as demonstrated by her second in the Landaluce Stakes and against open company.  Was beaten 8 that day, but can splash some speed, too.  I bet the 8 to win/place and then key over/under all the rest of them.

8th: 10-8-1-5-4…Need another single to keep the Pick 6 ticket reasonable and I go with the 10 — Looking at Thelake (which I do as often as I can).  She is consistent and can edge this field with a clean, closing trip.  Pistol Packin Rose picks up a huge rider switch and looms the biggest threat.  Shazara (1) could surprise with a clean trip, too.  I bet the 10 to win/place and then key over/under the rest of the numbers.

Good luck &

All the Best/Gene
