(Jack and Ford — two of the 3 grandsons — sport their racing wear)
We wrapped up the regular part of this 3-day weekend with another good day. Four wins. Five more exactas. Lots of fun.
Our exactas were real fun, too. They returned payouts of $11.70, $13.00, $20.80, a whopping $111.80 and $31.50 — for each $1 played. And, here’s hoping you had more than the minimum $1.
But that’s not all we got this weekend.
Not by a long shot.
And, you know how we do like our long shots.
We get bonus coverage this week. Monday is a Holiday. We get more racing. We get more action. We get more.
Here’a look at our Monday “More Day:”
1st: 8-9-3/10-11-7/(13)-3c/12…The “Baby Race” is 5 furlongs and a price tag of $40,000. I give the edge to Full Velocity (8), who comes from the barn of W. Bret Calhoun. So far this meet, the talented trainer is 0-for-8. But he can turn it around. Quickly. And, this one may be quick enough. The 2YO son of Tapiture has been working OK for the debut and the barn hits with .21% in this category. Dam of this one has 2 winners from 3 starters, too. Mr. Pickles (9) is trained by one talented young man. He hits with .25% of those in the MCL ranks. I’ve seen this one in the a.m. Has a shot here. The Beat (3) comes from a dam who has 1 winner from 1 starter. Rider starting to warm up, too. I bet the 8-9 across the board and then box the top 3 in one exacta. I will key the 8-9 over/under the 3-10-11-7-12 in a smaller unit.
2nd: 4-7/1-6-2/5-3…Frank’s Rockette (4) gets the nod in this field of nice 3YO fillies. The daughter of Into Mischief is coming off a nice 2nd to Kimari in the Purple Mountain Stakes. Looked like a winner in that one until the eventual champ gunned down the stretch. Returns as a beaten favorite, and the barn hits with .22% of those. Like the work at Payson Park on May 17. Watch out. Specially (2) is another low-odds filly. She ran 2nd in the Dixie Belle Stakes at Oaklawn Park in her last outing. Returned to work a bullet here on May 17. Interesting rider choice for this barn. Hmmm. I bet the 4-2 across the board and then box those 2 in the exacta. I will key the 4-2 over/under the rest of the numbers listed.
3rd: 2-8/7-1/4-3-6/5…Do Share (2) has raced here 4 times n the career, and has a win and 2 seconds. Should appreciate the return “home.” Work on May 17 looked like he perked up a bit and he ran a game second to the Graded Stakes winner, Seven Trumpets, the last time on this track. Nero (8) has not won a race since racing at Santa Anita in March of 2019. Long time between sips of cool water. Drops into the claiming ranks for the first time today, though, and the barn hits with .21% of those kind. Rates one more chance? I bet the 2 to win/place/show and then box the 2-8 in the exacta. I will key the 2-8 over/under the rest of the numbers listed in two smaller units.
4th: 3-12/7-4-5-11/9-6-1-(15)…Metropol (3) drops another couple of rungs in the claiming game for a barn that hits with .30% of those making the 3rd start off a layup. That combo makes this one mighty tough on paper. Barn is also winning at a .31% clip this meet after the first 16 starters. My first Key Play of the Day. I will? Play the 3 across the board and then key the 3 over/under the “all button.”
5th: 3-6/7-4-1-8/2-9-5…The “3” may be the popular number for me today. Go with another one here in Kurilov (3). This is another from the barn of Brad Cox. Drops from the $50,000 level to $32,000 today. Has 2 previous tries over this track. Both ended up with seconds. But both were against much tougher. I go with today. Shortlist (7) ran a good one at this level last time out as the beaten favorite. Barn hits with .23% of those making the 2nd start after a claim purchase. Love this rider choice here. I bet the 3 to win/place/show and then box the top 2 in the exacta. I will key the top 2 numbers over/under all the others listed in two smaller units.
6th: 4/7-10-1/2-9-8/5…My second Key Play of the Day comes here with Evil Lyn (4). And, yep. The 3YO Wicked Strong filly comes from the barn of Brad Cox. Big day ahead. Big. Day. This one didn’t run well last time out, but gets back to the sod today and the last time she was there? She won two in a row. The only two times she has been on grass. A different filly on the sod. Totally. I bet the 4 to win/place and then key the 4 over/under the numbers listed. I will also take a swing at the 4 over/under the “all button,” too.
7th: 2/4-3/9-8-7/11-5/(13)-6-10-1…My third Key Play of the Day rolls up here with Union Maiden (2). This 3YO daughter of Union Rags comes from the barn of Chad Brown. In 9 starts this meet, the barn has a 2-3-0 mark. This one hit the gate when leaving in the debut race at GP on Feb. 16. That is one of the worst things that can happen to any horse at the start. Any horse. But a first time starter? Lost all chance, at odds-on favoritism. Now she returns. If she can break cleanly, then I think she will showcase her talent. I bet the 2 to win/place/show and then key the 2 over/under the numbers listed. I will also key the 2 over/under the “all button,” in another version.
8th: 3-5/1-8-7-4/2-6…My “3” returns here with Echo Town (3). This one is likely to be a huge PT favorite, and rightfully so. The 3YO son of Speightstown has never been off the board in 4 starts and threw down a fierce battle with the undefeated Long Weekend in the Bachelor Stakes in the last outing. What a horse race. Never gave an inch. Never gave in. If that race didn’t take too much out of him? Watch out. Is tough as nails. Digital (5) could be a nice price to land on here, though. The 3YO son of Into Mischief does well at this distance with a win and a second in two tries. Barn hits with .24% when cutting back from a route to a sprint, too. Didn’t fare well in the last two routes and against some of the big boys. But this one is talented and speedy. I bet the 3-5 across the board and then box these two in the exacta. i will key the 3-5 over/under the rest of the numbers listed in two shorter versions.
9th: (15)-(16)-(14)/2-9-12/1-(13)-4/10-5-6/4-11…The feature today is a grass event going 11/16 miles. Hope the skies stay blue and the surface stays green in Lou today. The best of this bunch, to me, comes from the AE List. If any or all of these get in — 15-16-14 — then I go there. No question about it. If they do not? Then revert to the next series of numbers — led by Kulik Bear (2). This 4YO son of curling has a 2-1-2 mark in 5 starts over the grass and loves this distance, too. Won for fun last time out, but now loses that condition and moves up to face tougher. Has speed or can stalk. Love the May 17 work. Award Winner (9) is a speed ball that has a win over this course. Love the rider swap for today’s effort. This man can ride. Ramsey Solution (12) should relish a return to the grass today, too. Has two races over it. Last time, won here by nearly 7 to break the maiden. Chance. I bet the 2 to win/place/show and then box the top 3 in one exacta. I will key the 2 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller versions, as well. If the 15/16/14 get in? I go there.
10th: 8-4-2/1-11-9/3-5-6…Aggressivity (8) is a 5YO Dialed In gelding who is owned and trained by Steve Asmussen. Drops from the $40,000 tag to $20,000 for this event. Barn hits with .23% when making this kind of plunge. Should fit nicely here. Impunity (4) ships in from NY. Drops in class for this one, too. Barn hits with .25% of those returning as a beaten favorite. Bump Bailey (2) won last time out at this level for trainer Peter Miller. Barn hits with .29% when trying to repeat in the claiming ranks. All three of these rate a big shot here and are about even in my “numbers.” So? I bet the 8-2 across the board and then box the top 3 in one exacta. I will key the top 3 over (only) the 1-11-9 in a smaller version.
