(Stats to be updated after Thursday and Friday’s cards)

Here’s our looks at Churchill Downs on a huge Saturday Stakes Day, which will include the prestigious, $300,000 Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes. Looking forward to that festive and amazing occasion, where Churchill Downs helps promote our fine club.

1st: 10-9-5/3-7-12/1/2…Accommodate Eva (10) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter at the big oval in Louis-Town on this beautiful Saturday. This 2YO Munnings filly ran well at Saratoga as the beaten favorite on first ask. Ran into all kinds of issues in that affair, as well. Returns here for a barn that has been chilly all year, but an ole’ hard boot trainer once told me that a trainer with a good 2YO never committed suicide. Barn wins with .16% when returning with a beaten favorite. If she gets a clean journey? Look out. Krickle (9) could spice up the odds rack here. Jockey doesn’t inspire confidence, but this one ran a nice 2nd when on the main dirt just two starts ago. Chance. Mo For Us (5) goes for a HOF barn operator and will make the career debut here. Dam has produced 4 winners from 5 starters and 2 Stakes winners. Nice. Sharp work on Sept. 8. Rider is red hot. Lots to like here. I bet the 10-5 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 10-5 over/under the 9-3-7-12 in two smaller units.

2nd: 3/4-6/5/7/1…Fayette Spirit (3) ran well for Chad Brown and is now in a new barn operation. Will make the 2nd start with the new connections, and the trainer has won with .06% of the last 18 to do that. Hot rider is up and gets blinkers for the first time. Both of those things could help this one. A lot. I bet the 3 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will key the 3 over/under the 4-6-5-7-1 in the exactas. More with the 4-6 than the rest.

3rd: 10-(14)-1-2/9-(13)/3-11…Life Advice (10) gets the call here. This is a 2YO daughter of the great sire Into Mischief and has been training lights out for this first effort. Gets the meet’s best rider up and he has won with .38% of the last 24 for this trainer. Lots to like here. Almostgone Rocket (14) would have to get real lucky just to get in the starting gate from the AE List. But this daughter of Into Mischief is in the barn of Brad Cox and merits consideration, as well, if she makes it in. Mystical Chant (1) and Plagne Champagne (2) both have a shot here, as well. I def will use the latter. I bet the 10-2 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. 10-1-2. I will key the 10-2 over/under the 14-1-9-13-3-11 in two smaller units.

4th: 4-3/5-6/2/1…Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes…This is a great Stakes event sponsored and produced by Churchill Downs — our strategic and wonderful partner at the club. It is an amazing event with a purse of $300,000. And, it annual attracts some top horses. No difference this year — with an added twist. Bango (4) could not only win this Stakes Sprint, but could become the all-time leading winner at Churchill Downs for the flying Foley Family. The 6YO horse has started over this hallowed grounds a grand total of 18 times. Has amassed a record of 10-2-2. Has earned nearly $1 million at Churchill Downs — alone. How can you not root for the 11th win here. Right? Strobe (3) just may be the horse to beat, though. This 4YO son of Into Mischief has never missed the board in 8 lifetime tries and has a 1-1-0 mark in two starts here. Comes from the Brad Cox barn. Enough written. I bet the 4 to win/place and then box the 4-3 in the exactas. Sternly. Stern. Ly. I will key the 4-3 over/under the 5-6-2-1 in two smaller units.

5th: 1-5-2/8-6-4/3-7…Quick Hammer (1) gets the call here. The 3YO son of Mor Spirit goes for the Cox barn, which is winning at a .28% clip after 611 starts this year. This one has not won since the debut effort on Sept. 22, 2022. Long time between sips. But looks like he is training like a monster of late and the rider has won with .41% of the last 29 for this barn. Watch out. Stand for Freedom (5) could spice up the odds rack here. Trainer wins with .20% in the claiming ranks and this one had a nice 2nd here last year. Chance? Maybe? Debate (2) goes for one of the best young trainers in the game today. Has a win here. Has the breeding to be tough, too. Rooting for a good effort. I bet the 1-2 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I key the 1-2 over/under the 5-8-6-4 in two smaller units.

6th: 2/3/1-4/6//5…Open Mind Stakes…Wicked Halo (2) is, pure and simple, a beautiful monster on wheels. Has won nearly $1. 3 million in the career and has never missed the board in 5 starts here. Picks up the meet’s top rider and all of the credentials make this one a Key Play of the Day. No odds. Zero. But a key. I bet the 2 to win/place and then key the 2 over/under the 3-1-4-6 in the exactas. I key the 2 in the horizontals, too.

7th: 7-9-6/1-3-8/2-5//4…G3 Pocahontas Stakes…Youalmosthadme (7) should return to the winning ways here, IMO. This 2YO daughter of Oxbow ran 3rd in the Debutante at Ellis Park last time out, but that race was an absolute debacle. She stumbled at the gate. Had to chase 4 wide for much of the 7-furlongs. And, just could not close enough on a speed favoring surface. Shows back up here as a beaten, odds-on favorite and against a good group. But if she gets away clear and clean. Gone. Long. Gone. I bet the 7 to win/place and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 7 over/under the 9-6-1-3-8-2-5 in two more.

8th: 3-7/4-12/2-5-6-10//8-9…This is a 1-mile turf event for the allowance company who have not won more than 1 race — other than maiden or claimer. I go to Musical Score (3) — another from the Cox barn. This one is by the Triple Crown & Breeders’ Cup Classic winner American Pharoah and is owned by the powerhouse combo of Magnier-Tabor & Company. Nearly won the last time out. Just not enough ground at Ellis Park. Gets a solid grass rider, who doubles as the barn’s go-to rider, as well. Lots to like here in this spot. Hay Stack (7) gets to a new barn operator, who just had a super meet at KY Downs. Has had only 54 starters so far in the newly minted career on his own. This one used to be in the Chad Brown barn. Daughter of War Front should love this grass over the harder stuff at Ellis Park. Big shot here with Flavien Prat getting aboard. I bet the 3-7 across the board and then box these two sternly in the exactas. I will key the 3-7 over/under the 4-12-2-5-6-10 in two smaller units.

9th: 8-7-4/9-3-6/1/5-2…G3 Iroquois Stakes…This is the male version of the 2YO Stakes carded today, and will go at the 1-mile distance. Risk It (8) is and should be the heavy favorite. Comes in off a massive runaway win at Saratoga for Team Winchell. Son of Gun Runner looks and — seemingly — acts like his daddy. Big work at Saratoga on Sept. 4. Could be any kind. Right? Can’t dismiss. Can’t go against. Not until he shows a dent. Gettysburg Address (7) is my Upset Alert Special — especially at the ML odds of 12-1. Won on debut at Ellis Park and this son of Constitution should love the stretch out from 6 furlongs to this distance. The fact that he won going that short? Impressive. Dam was a Stakes winner who has already produced 4 winners from 5 staters and may get her first Stakes winner here, too. I use. Edified (4) is another from the Asmussen barn. Always have to look at the “other one” in a field that has two from the same connections. This one got eliminated in the Saratoga Special. But, the fact that the trainer went to NY to try a G2 in the second start. Shows something. I bet the 8-7 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 9-3-6 in a very small unit, as well.

10th: 4-7/2/3-6-10/5//11/1-8…G3 Locust Grove Stakes…This is a 11/16-mile test over the main track and a good one, indeed. I line up with Search Results (4). Has never won here in 2 tries. But has never missed the board, either. Has hit the board in 14 of 15 lifetime tries. Only miss came in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at KEE last Fall. New rider should fit perfectly. But 1-for-5 at this distance. Concern? Yep. A Mo Reay (7) has run this distance 4 times and has won 2. Both of those came after the Uncle Mo filly was moved from the Todd Pletcher barn to the current residence under the Brad Cox roof. Retuns as a beaten favorite here and the barn wins with .31% of the last 378 to do that. I’m in. I bet the 7 — take note — to win/place/show and then box the 4-7 sternly in the exactas. I will key the 4-7 over/under the 2-3-6-10-5 in two smaller units.

11th: 1-10-9/(13)/3-5-7/11-4-8/2…The finale is a 6-furlong MSW event for the 2YO fillies and I go rail side with the Intricate (1). Another daughter of Gun Runner and chestnut just like the day. First time starter, but the sire wins with .17% of those. Tier has teamed up with the trainer to go 5-0-1 in the last 11 outs. Sharp work on Sept. 8. I’m in. All in. I bet the 1 across the board and double down on the win wager. Triple down, too. I box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 1 over/under the 10-9-13-3-5-7-11 in two smaller units.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
