(Stats to be updated after Ellis Park’s card on Friday)

Here’s our looks at the ole’ “Pea Patch” on this Saturday afternoon:

st: 6-4/1-2-5/3…In a Jam (6) gets the call in the ole’ lid-lifter at the ole’ “Pea Patch” along the Ohio River in little Henderson, KY. This 2YO son of Preservationist ran well to be 3rd here on June 24. Tired in that one after prompting the pace from the get. Barn wins with .17% of the last 296 to make the 2nd career start. Hot rider takes the reins here. Sharp work on July 7, too. All signs are good. Master Switch (4) will make the career debut here and the barn wins with just .09% of the last 47 to make the career debut. In MSW class? Number drops to .05% of the last 108. Working well over this track, though, and that gives one some hope. I bet the 6 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 6-4 in the exactas. And, I will key the 6-4 over/under the 1-2-5-3 in two smaller units.

nd: 6-5-7/3/2-4/1…Palace Kitten (6) won the last time out and now drops in the claiming ranks for a barn outfit that makes its’ living off the claiming game. This trainer has won with .21% of 516 starts this year. Rider has won with .24% of the last 25 for this barn, too. Look for this one to be coming late, again. No reason to expect anything less. Legal Deal (5) was claimed for $16,000 last time out and moves up a rung in the class action. Ran 2nd in that last affair. New barn wins with .19% when making the debut for this tr4ianer. Get a rider who has won 3 of 4 for this trainer over the last 60 days. Wow. Crosstown Shootout (7) has hit the board in each of the last two outings and has a win just two starts ago. Has a 5-9-2 record in 21 starts at this distance. Looks poised. I bet the 6 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 3 in two smaller units.

rd: (12)/4-6-7/2-11/1-3-9/5-8…This is a 5.5-furlong sprint over the turf and I will give my top number to the MTO entry — Alder (12). If this one comes off the sod? I load up here. No questions asked. If it stays on the sod, then I divert to Runnin’ Rocket (4). This 2YO son of War Front has all the breeding ingredients to make a successful grass horse. Warmups in the a.m. are solid. Barn is highly underrated and has won with 2 of 6 so far this meet. Clever rider is best on the sod, IMO. I bet the 12 if it comes off the sod. I bet the 4 if it stays on. Across the board. And, then I will box the 4-6-7 in one set of exactas. I will key the 4 over/under the 6-7-2-11-1-3-9 in two softer units.

th: 1-6/4/5-2/3…Megan’s Clara (1) won two of the last three outings and has now been on a roll of late. Over the last five starts, this one has 2 wins; 2 seconds and a 4th. New rider knows his way around the oval and likes to move quickly after the gates open. This one has speed, too. Look out. Cancel This (6) is another speed ball and will probably get urged to go early and often. Distance is this one’s concern. I bet the 1 across the board and then box the 1-6 ins the exactas. I will key the 1-6 over/under the 4-5-2-3 in two smaller units.

th: 3/5-2-4/1/6-8-7…The first Key Play of the Day comes here with Big Java (3). This 4YO daughter of Exaggerator was claimed last time out for $30,000. Now shows up for $10,000. Barn wins with .38% of the last 26 to get a drop off the purchase price. New rider has won with .19% of the last 43 for this barn operation, as well. May improve with a return to the route distance. I like this one. A lot. I bet the 3 across the board and then key the 3 over/under the 5-2-4-1-6-8-7 in the exactas. More with the 5-2-4 than the rest.

th: 4-1-5/(9)/6-7-8/3/2…Rising Empire (4) has run 5 times on the sod in the career, to date. Has a win and 2 runner-ups in those efforts. Will make the Ellis Park debut here and will drop out of the Graded Stakes company to do so. This is a better spot, by far, even though this one did run 2nd in a G2 at the Fair Grounds in March. Has some speed and some talent. Is it enough? Cellist (1) ran a super 2nd last time out in a Stakes at Turfway Park. Moves to the sod again here and has a 3-2-2 record in 13 sod races, to date. Been facing much tougher. Should appreciate this crowd better. I bet the 4-1 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 4-1 over/under the 5-9-6-7-8-3 in two smaller units.

th: 7-6-5/4/1-3-8/2…Excellent Question (7) gets the nod here. This 3YO daughter of Speightstown is very well bred and will get blinkers for the first time here. Barn wins with .16% of the last 122 to don the shades for the first time. This is the 2nd route race, too, and the band wins with .21% of the last 34 to do that. This one should be a tough out. Big Dig (6) gets Lasix for the first time ever here and the barn wins with .20% of the last 30 to get at the anti-bleeder on tap. Will make the 2023 debut here, but the barn is winning with l.16% of the last 113 to be away this long. I bet the 7 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 7-6 over/under the 5-4-1-3-8 in two smaller units.

th: 11-3/2-8-12-10-4-5/6/1/7…This is a 11/16-mile grass event for the fillies and mares and I will journey to the outside part of the gate to saddle up with Clever Joke (11). This 3YO daughter of Practical Joke has never miss the board in 4 starts, to date. Nearly won last time out at Churchill Downs in May. Gets a top rider here to handle the reins and the work on July 4 was spot on. Look out here. Fogo Island (3) could spice up the odds rack here, and, thus, is a Upset Special Alert. This 3YO daughter of Speightstown has supreme breeding and the blinkers go on for a highly under-rated trainer, too. Barn wins with .09% on first try over the sod. I bet the 11 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 11-3 in the exactas. Sternly. And, I will key the 11-3 over/under the 2-8-12-10-4-5-6 in two smaller units.

th: 11-6-7/3/5-8-9-10-12/4-2//1…The day’s finale is a 5.5-furlong turf sprint and I will ride side-saddle with B D Valeski (11). This one got no favors with the outside post, but if you toss the last race? Has hit the board in the previous 4. Faced some good ones in that span, too. Top rider is having a down meet, but can pop for a big day anytime soon. Trainer has gone 4-2-1 in the last 12. Arabian Price (6) nearly pulled off the win last time out and this one has been knocking on heaven’s door for some time now. Has only one win in 24 lifetime tries, though. Ugh. Red Hot Rod (7) shifts barns after Keeneland this Spring. New barn wins with .10% of the last 39 to make the bar debut. Gets a nice veteran rider to take the mount and he is winning at a 20% rate this meet. I bet the 11 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 3 in two smaller units.
