(Stats to be updated with this week’s action)

Here’s our looks at the ole’ “Pea Patch” on a celebratory Stakes weekend:

1st: 6/5-3/1-4/2…The first Key Play of the Day comes in the ole’ lid-lifter at the ole’ “Pea Patch” on this Saturday morn. I saddle up strong with Who’s Snow Trouble (6) in this 2YO MCL event for the purchase price of $30,000. This guy has run three times already and now will get back to the dirt, where he was 2nd against tougher here on June 16. Tried the sod last time out and that experiment just didn’t pan out. Barn wins with .25% of the last 28 when returning to the gate as a beaten favorite. Rider is having a very solid meet. I bet the 6 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 6 over/under the 5-3-1-4-2 in the exactas. More on top and more with the 5-3 than the rest.

2nd: 6-4/2-5/7/1/3…I go back to the well, once again, with a #6 choice and this time line up with Hey Boss (6). This 4YO gelding was claimed also time out when finishing third against the same level of competition here on June 10. Game in that effort and this will be the first start for the new barn operation. Should fit here and the rider is doing well. Nordic Light (4) goes for the barn of Brad Cox, who is a little more experienced that the trainer of the top pick. The barn is winning at a  .38% rate after 13 mounts this meet. Gets a good gate rider and will make the first start for the new barn and returns as a beaten favorite, too. Barn wins with .30% of the last 366 to do that. I bet the 6-4 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 6-4 over/under the 2-5-7-1 in two smaller units.

3rd: 4-7-9/2-5-10/1/(11)-6-(12)…Own the Field (4) gets the nod here for a barn that will convert from the dirt to the sod. Ran a great one at Saratoga last August (a year ago) in only previous sod try. Barn wins with .17% of the last 107 to make this surface switch. Look out here at an Upset Alert price. Birthday Munnings (7) is the ML favorite and should be the PT fan’s choice, too. This one gets Lasix for the first time and the barn wins with .18% of the last 128 to add the anti-bleeder meds. Rider is having a super meet, winning at a .20% clip. Threat. Zaphod (9) could spring a mild upset here, too. This one goes for a solid barn operation and ran OK on the grass last time out. Any improvement off that one? Right there. I bet the 4-7 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top two numbers over/under the 9-2-5-10-1 in two smaller units.

4th: 5-3-1/2//4-6/7…Olga Isabel (5) is the even-money ML favorite and goes for the Brad Cox barn, which is taking over and making the first start with this one. Barn wins with .22% of the last 98 to make the barn debut. New rider and first start of the 2023 campaign. Lots of firsts here, but lots to like, too. I’m taking the flyer. Pigalle (3) goes for one of the top young trainers in the game today and rates a chance with the 3rd start off the layoff. Barn wins with .21% of the last 34 to do that. I bet the 5-3 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 2 in two smaller units.

5th: 1/6-10-(11)/8-9-2/4/3-5…The next Key Play of the Day comes here with the railbird Howboutdemapples (1). This 4YO daughter of Tiznow has the pedigree to be tough on the grass and has a win at this distance, too. Ran OK here on June 25. Gets a new rider, who is 0-for-18 so far this meet. Ugh. But this one has the credentials and may tug the jockey home. I bet the 1 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 1 over/under the 6-10-11-8-9-2-4 in the exactas. More with the 6-10 than the rest.

6th: 3-1-7/4-5-11-12/(13)-2-6-8/(14)…Riperton (3) will make the career debut here and gets my top slot. This one goes for a trainer who is winning at a nice .27% rate after 11 starts this meet. One of the most under-respected conditioners in the game today. Breeding there for this daughter of Constitution and out of a Stakes winning dam. Lots to like. I like a lot. I bet the 3 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 3-1 over/under the 7-4-5-11-12-13-2 in two smaller units.

7th: 6-9-4/1/(10)/3/2/5-7-8…Madrilena (6) comes back on the grass and I can forgive the last ione. Caught extremely wide throughout that debacle and now may be a lot closer with a cleaner break. Good gate rider still up and this one comes from a dam who has 4 turf winners from 5 starters. Lots of pedigree in this package. Lady Goldstart (9) will be heavily bet, IMO, and should be. Loves this sprinters distance and has gone 2-1-0 in 5 starts at this sprint on the sod affair in the past. Rider is 0-for-14 this meet. Interesting choice. I bet the 6 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 6 over/under the 9-4-1-10-3-2 in two smaller units.

8th: 2-9/3-1/6/7/4-8//5…Jeff Hall Memorial Stakes…Today’s Stakes is name after the former GM, who was one of the most respected and well-liked persons in Ellis Park history. This 6.5-furlong affair is over the main track and features a classy group. I will go with O Besos (2), who will be making the 2023 debut. But this 5YO son of KY Derby winner has run super off the bench before and is training well. If he is as good as he once was? Look out. I bet the 2 across the board and then double down on the win wager. Triple Down, too. I will box the 2-9 in one set of exactas. And, I will key the 2 over/under the 9-3-1-6-7 in two smaller units.

9th: (12)-(14)-4/3-5-10/2-7-9/1-6-8…The day’s finale is another grass race and it is dart-throwing time. Any. All. Have a legit shot. Seriously. I have no clue. I go to the AE List if the 12 or 14 get in. If they don’t? I go to the first timer — Heartstruck (4). This daughter of a KY Derby winner goes for a barn that wins with .09% of the last 43 to debut on the sod. But this one comes from a Stakes-winning mare who has thrown a turf winner already, as well. I like this pedigree and the works coming in. I bet the 4 across the board and then double down on the win wager. Upset Alert. I will also key the 4 over/under the 12-14-3-5-10-2-7-9 in the exactas. More withe the 12-14-3-5-10 than the rest.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
