(Stats to be updated with this week’s picks)

Here’s our looks at the ole’ “Pea Patch” on Sunday Funday in country-side Henderson, KY, the bustling town on the banks of the mighty Ohio River:

st: 4/5/2-3-7/6/1…The first Key Play of the Day comes in the very first race of the day, too. I line up with Punctuality (4), who is an amazing 2-5 odds in the Brisnet.com ML. Can’t go much lower than that by PT. But this 3YO son of Union Rags does drop from the MSW ranks at Lone Star to the $10,000 level here at Ellis Park. Move up in circuits, to be sure. But this one nearly won the debut back in April in Texas. Could like the longer distance here and the rider has gone 4-0-1 in the last 5 for this barn. Nice. I bet the 4 to win/place and then key the 4 over/under the 5-2-3-7-6 in the exactas. More with the 5 than the rest.

nd: 2-6-5/1/3-4…Intrepid Heart (2) drops to the career-low price tag here and could dominate this field. Just ran a good one to be 2nd in a $62,500 claimer two starts back, when this barn took control. Gets a veteran rider back up and the barn wins with .33% of the last 21 to make the 2nd start off the claim purchase. This one has earned nearly $600,000 in the career. “Old man” had style. Mobster Gun (6) threw a clunker in last time out when facing tougher. Was claimed for $40,000 just two starts ago, when he nearly won. May rebound here. Some. Sprinklehead (5) won the last time out for $20,000 and has two wins in a row. Has speed to burn and that style of running has done well here. Can not count out. I bet the 2 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 1 in two smaller units.

rd: 10-5-6/9/2-3-8-4/(13)-(14)-(16)/1-7-11-12…The first turf race of the day will be contested at 5.5 furlongs and will be held for the 2YO fillies. Love this challenge. I go with Maghra (10), who is by one of the best grass sires in the game today. Irish-bred filly will make the debut here for a barn operator who wins with .10% on first ask and with about the same when debuting on the grass. Works are solid. Nice rider choice. Love the odds, at 8-1 in the ML. Upset Alert. I also look at Two Hearted (5) in this spot. This one has run over the AW in PA and has run two solid races. Barn wins with .29% of the last 7 to move to the sod for the first time. Chance. Wonder Wave (6) may be the horse to beat. Breeding suggests grass on both top and bottom. Dam has already thrown two turf winners and a Stakes winner. Works are spot on. Spot on. another one listed at 8-1 in the ML. Must use for me. I bet the 10-6 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas.  I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 9 in two smaller units.

th: 7-5-1/2-3-6-4…Coexist (7) drops considerably in the claiming ranks here and the barn is searching for its first win of the meet. Ran a very good 3rd here on July 2. If any improvement at all, then this one could be circle bound. Charley Rude (5) returns as a beaten favorite here, and the barn wins with .30% of the last 56 to go postward. New rider up, too. Look here. Tamara’s Way (1) just broke the maiden last time out and that was with the addition of blinkers. May have been the cure. I bet the 7-5 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 7-5 over/under the 1-2-3-6-4 in two smaller units.

th: 5-2-7/6/3-(8)//1/4…Anglophile (5) gets the nod here. This is another grass event and will be at the endurance test of 11/4-miles. This one has never been that long before, but does have a win and a runner-up in 4 previous grass tries and has a win here, too. This barn does well and horse’s always look good. King Curlin (2) is really good right now. Has hit the board in 4 of the last 5 and this barn knows where and how to spot them. Husband of trainer gets the rider job here and has won with .32% of the last 28 for the wife. Threat. I bet the 5-2 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 6 in two smaller units.

th: 7-5-9/6-3/1-11-10/2-4/8…Up On the Edge (7) is a 2YO daughter of Upstart and will make the career debut here. Barn wins with .17% on first ask and this one comes in off a very sharp work at KEE on July 11. Sire does well with first timers and the dam of this one has 5 winners from 5 starters and has already thrown a Stakes winner. Nice. Classy’n Connected (5) is a first timer for one of the best young trainers in the game today. Working well. May fit nicely. Stairstep Toheaven (9) ran 3rd last time out and that was over this track. Experience. I bet the 7 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 6-3 in two smaller units.

th: 3-1/2-9/11/6/4-5-7-10…Pea Patch Stakes…This is a 5.5-furlong test over the sod and I go with Derring Do (3) in a bit of an upset here. This 3YO daughter of Into Mischief has never missed the board in 4 starts and has 2 wins. Last two races over the sod and both were spot on. Trainer has won with .28% of 179 runners this year. Look out here. Could be popping at the wire. American Apple (1) nears won a G3 last time out and has run in 5 straight Stakes events. Experience here. One to beat. I bet the 3 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 3-1 sternly in the exactas. I will key the 3-1 over/under the 2-9-11-6 in two smaller units.

th: 1-11/2-10-7//8-12-6//3-4-9…Single Dot Yaht (1) is my Upset Special of the Day. This 3YO son of Good Magic goes for a great friend and trainer and should love this one after a deep-closing 4th over the slop here on June 11. All kinds of issues in that bad boy. Bad start. Checked. Blocked. Look for more with the new rider up here. Look for a lot more. I bet the 1 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 1-11 in the exactas. Sternly. I will key the 1-11 over/under the 2-10-7 in two smaller units.

th: 3-1/12-11-7-6/2/4/5-9-10…The finale of the day is a 5.5-furlong test drive over the sod and I will line up with Only Kidding (3). This one has never won in 5 previous tries at this distance and ran poorly here on June 15. But? New rider up and he has gone 3-1-2 in the last 7 ups. Before the last debacle, this one had hit the board in 4 straight, too. Looking for a rebound effort here. Hideki (1) ran well here last time out and now has hit the board in the last 5 outs. Has 3 runner-ups in a row. This one is the one to beat, IMO. Drop in class should assist the effort. I bet the 3-1 across the board and then box these two sternly in the exactas. I will key the 3-1 over/under the 12-11-7-6-2-4 in two smaller units.
