Here’s our looks at the beautiful card and day of racing planned for Horseshoe Indianapolis on G3 Indiana Derby and Indiana Oaks Day:

st: 1-8/9-7/3-6/10-11/2/4-5…Berea (1) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter on this spectacular day of racing at one of the most spectacular, down-home, great-feeling, nature’s best Thoroughbred racing venues in the land. This 4YO Indiana-bred filly has raced 5 times so far. Has 2 runner-ups and is coming off a near-miss 2nd here on June 20. Just gave out late in that one after setting all the fractions. New rider up here, due to injury. Trainer better known for his Quarter Horses and successes in that venue. But? This one has speed and that is dangerous here. C V Scenic Legacy (8) won by a nose last time out, but was DQ’d for an infraction in the stretch drive. Goes from the apprentice rider to a seasoned veteran, who is having a very solid meet this year. I like this one. Take note. I bet the 8 across the board — take note — and double down on the win wager. I will box the 1-8 sternly in the exactas. I will key the 1-8 over/under the 9-7-3-6 in two smaller units.

nd: 3/5-6/7/1/2/4…The first Key Play of the Day comes here with Roman Goddess (3). This one is listed at 4-5 in the ML, and will pick up Lasix for the first time. This barn — which normally does much better in this ballpark — wins with .15% of the last 124 to get the anti-bleeder for the first time. Gets a solid gate rider, who is having a superb meet here in limited mounts. Moves from the sod to the dirt and this trainer wins with .18% of the last 324 to do that. Not a cinch, by any means, but a rather weak group has been assembled here, too. I bet the 3 across the board and then double down on the win wage. I will key the 3 over/under the 5-6-7-1-2-4 in the exactas. More with the 5-6-7 than the rest.

rd: 1-3-9/4-6-8/2-7/5…I will go back to the rail here and line up with Solar Power (1). This 3YO gelding comes in off a third place finish here on June 15. Looked to be coming late and just ran out of room. Gets an extra half-furlong here to work with and returns as a beaten favorite. Barn wins with .38% of the last 26 to do that. Gets the meet’s top rider up, too. Threat. Big time. I bet the 1 across the board and then box the 1-3-9 in the exactas. I will key the 1 over/under the 3-9-4-6-8 in two smaller units, as well.

th: 1/2-4-9/3-5-8/6-7…Mari Hulman George Memorial Handicap…The second Key Play of the Day comes here with another railbird — Heartyconstitution (1). This is the first of 8 Stakes on the card and will be contested at 11/16-miles over the main dirt surface. This 4YO Constitution filly comes in off three straight wins and the Pennsylvania-bred won two of those in open company. Trainer is a bit chilly here this meet, but expert rider travels in from KY for this mount. Promising. I bet the 1 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 1 over/under the 2-4-9-3-5-8 in two smaller units.

th: 12-1/3-6-7-9-11/2/8-10…Ellen’s Lucky Star Handicap…This is a 1-mile event carded for the grass and will be restricted to Indiana-breds. I go with Star Wisher (12), from the far outside. This 3YO Stormy Atlantic has the breeding on the sire side, and the dam has thrown 2 turf winners from the first 4 starters. Hot rider and best in these here parts is back up for this journey. Helps. Lots to like here. Corningstone (1) is a legit threat. Has hit the board in each of the last two and nearly won a Stakes here last time out. Great trainer/rider connection, who have teamed up to win .13% of the last 63 outs. Barn wins with .23% of the last 143 to run in non-Graded Stakes. I bet the 12 across the board and then box the 12-1 sternly in the exactas. I will key the 12-1 over/under the 3-6-7-9-11-2 in two smaller units.

th: 1-11/(13)-(14)/2-3-8/6/4-12/5-9-10…Back to rail here (with a lot of love for the #1s so far), and Big City Heat (1). This 4YO Indiana-bred goes for a trainer who has won only .08% of 50 starts this year and is 0-fer the meet after 7 starts. But? This one has run two nice 2nds in a row and the barn does win with .20% of the last 112 on dirt. Like the rider. Forever Friends (11) is 8-1 and parked on the outside, but this one merits consideration and, perhaps, some love at the windows. Comes off a huge effort here on June 17. If ready, this one could be a very tough out with the meet’s top rider up. I bet the 1-11 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 1-11 over/under the 13-14-2-3-8-6 in two smaller units.

th: 3-6/8-11-9/7-4/5-2-12-10/1…Snack Handicap…This is a 1-mile turf event just for the Indiana-breds and I saddle up with Backyard Justice (3). Top barn operation is having a so-so meet, so far, but the one has hit the board in the last 3 outings and has a 1-2-0 mark in just 3 turf starts, to date. Top rider up. Huge threat from a stalking position. King Ice (6) is on a roll of late, and has hit board in 4 of 7 lifetime. Blinkers go back on and has a late run to be dangerous. Clever and tough turf rider up from KY for the trip. Concern is 0-for-2 on turf so far. I bet the 3 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 3-6 in the exactas. I will key the 3-6 over/under the 8-11-9-7-4 in two smaller units.

th: 6-5-8/3/7/1-9/2/4-10…Michael G. Schaefer Memorial Stakes…This Stakes event will be contested at the 1 mile & 70 yards distance over the main track. I saddle up with Creative Minister (6). This 4YO colt ran 3rd in the 2022 Preakness Stakes behind the likes of Early Voting and Epicenter. Nice company. Has not won a race since then, but the last two outings are very encouraging. Needs some pace to run into, but if that sets up for him? Look out. Trademark (5) has gone 4-1-1 in 17 lifetime starts for a barn that seemingly underachieves with top bloodstock. But? This one ran a solid 3rd in a G3 Stakes at Monmouth Park on June 17 and that is something to build on. Has 3 wins in 7 starts at this distance. Promise Keeper (8) would be no surprise if he were to win this one. Tough rider and is coming off a huge effort at Ellis Park in the last. Threat, and I use. I bet the 6-8 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 6-8 over/under the 5-3-7-1-9-2 in two smaller units.

th: 8-11-10/9-3/2-6/7/1-5…Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial Stakes…This is a 11/16-mile turf event that is open to any and all who meet the conditions of this open Stakes. I go with Verstappen (8). This 4YO gelded son of War Front has plenty of sire power and the dam is a Stakes-winner who has already thrown 2 turf winners from 3 starters. This one challenged G1 company last out and didn’t measure up to those lofty standards, but won a G2 the race before at KEE, and, sometimes, those are equal to G1s. Has never been over this sod, but does have a 2-2-2 mark in 10 turf tries, to date. Looks the best, to me. Gentle Soul (11) is a deep, deep, deep closer and will need lots of pace help and a clear late path. If both of those come true? Look out. In Love (10) is a G1 winner at KEE (2021) but has not seen the winner’s circle since running n the Prairie Bayou Stakes over the Tapeta at Turfway Park last December. Needs to find old form. But if he does? I bet the 8 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 9-3 in two smaller units. I will also key the 8 over/under the 8-11-10-9-3-2-6-7 in two smaller units.

th: 8-7/1-2-3-10-4/5-11//6-9…Indiana General Assembly Distaff Handicap…This is a 11/16-mile event over the sod for the gals and I line up with another #8 — Henrietta Topham (8). This 5YO mare has grass on both top and bottom of the family and the dam has thrown 2 turf winners, as well. Has won 2 in a row — including the G3 Mint Julep Stakes at Churchill Downs on KY Oaks Day. Has 5 wins in 10 grass starts. Nice. Lovely Princess (7) ships in from KY for trainer Ken McPeek, who is winning at a .21% rate after 14 starts here this meet. Brings along #1 rider for the trip, too. Has hit the board in three of the last four, with a pair of wins and a tough-beat 2nd last time out. Likes to stalk. Which is nice for this track. I bet the 8-7 across the board and then box these two sternly in the exactas. I will key the 8-7 over/under the 1-2-3-10-4-5-11 in two smaller units.

th: 2-3/5/6/7-1-8-4…G3 Indiana Oaks…The meet’s top filly Stakes and a nice field has been assembled for this 11/16-mile dirt event. Leading the charge should be Taxed (2), who is coming in off a surprising — if not shocking — win in the G2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico the last time out. Upset some real good ones in that one and looks to keep the momentum going here. Will come from out of it, which is not always the best scenario over this main track. Will be interesting to see if she can duplicate the last. Merlazza (3) is 6-1 in the Brisnet.com ML and I love it. This daughter of Medaglia d’Oro didn’t have the best of starts in the Black-Eyed Susan and wore out the front end until she wilted that day. Too fast. Too early. May sit off the speedsters here, and there are some. Could set up perfectly. Upset Alert. I bet the 3 — take note — to win/place/show and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 2-3 in one set of exactas. And, I will key the 3 over/under the 2-5-6-7-1-8-4 in two smaller units.

th: 5/8-3/2-7/4-9/1//6…G3 Indiana Derby…The day’s finale is the lynchpin of “The Shoe’s” Summer Meet and it will be a good one — again. I will go with my last Key Play of the Day here and a horse who could still become one of the best of this generation — Verifying (5). This guy ran his eyeballs out to be 2nd in the G3 Matt Winn Stakes at Ellis Park on June 11. That was his first start since setting blistering fractions in an ill-fated “steal attempt” of the KY Derby. Gets this meet’s top rider up. Barn is winning at a whopping .42% after the first 26 starts this meet. Wow numbers. And, this one is training lights out. Lights. Out. Turn out the lights. I love this one. I bet the 5 to win/place/show and then double/triple/quadruple down on the win wager. I will key the 5 over/under the 8-3-2-7-4-9-1 in the exactas. Lots more on top. And, lots more with the 8-3-2-7 than the rest.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
