(Stats to be updated after KY Downs’ cards on Saturday and Sunday)

Here’s our looks at Horseshoe Indianapolis on a big “Stakes Day” celebration in Shelbyville, IN. Hope you make it to the oval today. If so, look us up. We will be in the clubhouse. Giving out picks. Giving out some chilly pops. Giving out some love.

1st: 7-8/5-4/3-6/1-2…Master of Disguise (7) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter at “The Shoe” on this “Hump Day” festive occasion. This 2YO son of Mastery has a 3rd and a couple of 4ths on the resume at the MSW level. Now, this one drops to the $25,000 MCL ranks. Drop should help elevate this one’s chances. A lot. Nations Dream (8) moves from the MSW level to the MCL ranks, too, and this barn wins with .26% of the lat 19 to do that. Was 3rd last time out at a minor league track, but may bring a big league game here. I bet the 7 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 7-8 in the exactas. I will key the 7-8 over/under the 5-4-3-6 in two smaller units.

2nd: 2/6-3-1-4//5-7…The first Key Play of the Day comes here with the deuce — Swiss Guard (2). This one may be the Upset Alert Play of the Day, as well. This 3YO son of American Pharoah is listed at 8-1 in the ML by the fine folks at Brisnet.com. If he stays there. I go with both destinations. Drops to the bargain bin after a solid run in Chicago against tougher company. Rider has 16 wins here this meet and should get some more mounts, soon. Barn wins with .32% — whopping number — 5th the 3rd start of a layoff and is winning with .23% of 139 starts this year. Great job.  I bet the 2 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will key the 2 over/under the 6-3-1-4 in the exactas. More on top.

3rd: 1/2-7/3/4/5-6…The second Key Play of the Day comes here with Eyes of Gold (1). This one is the ML favorite and is listed at 9-5 in the odds department. Has hit the board in 6 of 8 lifetime tries, but 5 of those have been in the “Show” category. Needs to show she can finish the deal. Moves from Ellis Park to the Indy venue here and may find the circle for the first time. I bet the 1 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 1 over/under the 2-7-3-4-5-6 in the exactas. More with the 2-7 than the rest.

4th: 2-4/6/1-7/3//5…Little Sister Sue (2) goes for a top barn operation in this area. Has won with .20% of 255 starts. This one has run two super ones in a row and sure seemed to like the sod last time out. Came with a late rush after a wide trip. If kept a hair closer to the pace? Look out. Tall Girl (4) goes for a top barn here, too. Has run here 3 times before and has a 2nd and a 3rd on the resume. Has only 1 win in 12 turf starts. Ugh. I bet the 2 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 2-4 in the exactas. I will key the 2 over/under the 4-6-1-7-3 in two smaller units.

5th: 5-8/1-9/3-2-10/6-4/7…Shooter Justice (5) takes another swipe at the “bargain bin” here and this Indy-bred ran well at this level last time out, when dropped in for the bottom bracket. Returns here as a beaten favorite and the barn wins with .27% of the last 89 to return to the gate as a beaten fan’s choice. One to beat, IMO. Fierce Justice (8) drops all the way from an allowance condition to the “bin” here. Barn wins with .18% of the last 314 in the claiming ranks. I bet the 5 across the board and then box the 5-8 in the exactas. I will key the 5-8 over/under the 1-9-3-2-10-6 in two smaller units.

6th: 9-8-1/5-6/3/2-7//4…This is a 5-furlong turf sprint and I line up with April Cover (9). Comes to town for a HOF trainer, who has won with .25% of 69 starts here this meet. Meet’s top rider takes the saddle job for the first time since they teamed up to be 2nd just three starts ago. Look out here. Has speed to burn. Integrated Design (8) could spice up the odds rack. Trainer has won with just .05% of 87 starts this year and is 0-for-9 here. But? Won at Ellis Park just 2 starts ago and that was impressive. Riparound (1) won the last outing here to break the MSW. Barn wins with .13% when moving up to face winners for the first time. Rider has won with 1 of 3 for this trainer over the last two months. I bet the 9-8 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the 9-8 over/under the 1-5-6-3-2-7 in two smaller units.

7th: 7-8-2/9/5-6/1//3…Hoosier Heartland Handicap…I will go with the heart and soul of our very own racing operation — Diamond Solitaire (7). This 5YO mare has 5 career wins here and has been facing “open company” in her allowance races on the dirt of late. Ran very well in back to back races in the mid-summer. Please do yourself a favor and toss the grass Stakes event. She hated that turf on that day and she will not see the sod again, in her career. She has told us — loud and clear — that she doesn’t prefer it. She does like this dirt track, though. In 20 starts here, she has gone 5-6-3. Has faced some good ones, along the way, too. Diamond’s story is a great one. Catch me sometime and I will tell you all about her, if you have not read or heard before. She deserves a Stakes win. Maybe here? I bet the 7 across the board and double/triple down on the win wager. I will key the 7 over/under the 8-2-9-5-6-1 in two smaller units.

8th: 6-7/3-1/4-9/2//8/5…Empire Handicap…I go with Cash Logistics (6) in this Stakes event. The 6YO gelding ran a huge one over the sod in the Bucchero Handicap here on Aug. 23. Nearly won that one before tiring late. Gets back to the dirt here, and this guy has a 7-2-0 mark in 10 starts over this main track. That’s solid. And…very good. Mr Chaos (7) is a good horse and has won over $419,000 in the career, to date. Has speed. Can he carry it the route distance? Good question. I bet the 6 across the board and then box the 6-7 in the exactas. Sternly. I will key the 6-7 over/under the 3-1-4-9-2 in two smaller units.

9th: 5-7-8/6-3/9-1/10-4/2…The finale of the day is a 1-mile turf event for the Indy-breds and I will go with another talented runner from our group — Knight’s Move (5). This son of Majestic Harbor ran over the sod for the first time last out and look to be an imposing factor at the 1/4 pole. But it was just his 2nd start in over a year and his first route after only one race at an abbreviated sprint distance. Great race, IMO. He galloped out best of all, too. If he runs back the same race? I think he wins. Impressively. I bet the 5 across the board and then double/triple down on the win wager. I will box the 5-7-8 in the exactas. And, I will key the 5 over/under the 7-8-6-3-9-1-10-4 in two smaller units.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
