(Stats to be updated after Sunday’s cards)

Here’s our looks at the final day of racing at the 2023 meet at Kentucky Downs — the all-turf facility in South-West Kentucky. The weather has been spectacular. The racing has been spectacular. The grounds have been spectacular. The excitement has been spectacular.

No reason not to finish the meet in spectacular fashion.

1st: 7-4/10-9/11-5/(13)/3/6-12…Movin’ On Up (7) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter over the hills and dales over KY Downs on “Closing Day 2023.” This 2YO filly ran super in the career debut at Ellis Park. That was over the sod there and this one looks poised to make a serious run here for great connections. Trainer wins with .14% of the last 163 to make the 2nd career start, but moves up to .20% of the last 25 to make the 2nd start over the grass. Looks formidable. Ocean Mermaid (4) gets the blinkers off for the 3rd career try and this barn wins with .24% of the last 124 to lose the shades. Tried Stakes company in the career debut and ran 2nd. Talent here. To be sure. Will be the speed of this race. Daughter of Kingman should be highly regarded at the betting windows, too. Rider is 4-4-3 in the last 16. Nice. I bet the 7-4 across the board and then box these two solidly in the exactas. I will bet the 4 across the board again and double down on the win wager. Top pick. I will key the 7-4 over/under the 10-9-11-5 in two smaller units.

2nd: 3-11-9-8/1-12/6/4-10-(15)…Jacked (3) is a first timer for the barn of Brad Cox, who is just 1-2-2 in the first 6 outs here this meet. Well below the % of wins that this outfit is used too, but this 2YO son of Violence looks to have some lick. Sharp work on Sept. 1. Veracruzin (11) rates a shot here in the 2nd try. Barn wins with about twice as many on 2nd ask as the fist and the dam of this one has 5 winners from 7 starters — including 3 turf winners. Well bet in debut and pedigree is very solid. I bet the 3-11 across the board and then double down on the 11. I will box the top 4 numbers in the exactas. And, I will key the 3-4 over/under the 9-8-1-12-6 in two smaller units.

3rd: 1-2/12/7/11-8-9/6-3-10/4…Outadore (1) drops to the $50,000 claiming level here and is most certainly a huge candidate to wind up in a new barn on Wednesday night. this 5YO gelding has already won over $722,000 and loves the AW surfaces that will be forthcoming in a few months. Irad Ortiz, Jr. takes the mount and look at the difference in riders here. Titled towers (2) goes for a top young trainer, who has had a super year — winning at .23% clip after 139 starts. This veteran has speed and consistency. Two admirable qualities. Chance. I bet the 1 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 1-2 sternly in the exactas. I will key the 1-2 over/under the 12-7-11-8-9-6 in two smaller units.

4th: 6-7-2/4-11-5/3-9-1/10-12-(15)/8-(13)-(14)…Zambezi (6) is a 3YO son of Candy Ride who will get to the grass for the first time. Barn wins with .1% of the last 296 to make this surface switch, and the HOFer’s son will get the mount. Ran well in all 5 previous tries and has never missed the board. Will he like the sod here? Can he win here? TBD. Implementation (7) won the last time out and now has 4 wins in 13 starts. Trainer has gone 2-1-2 in 8 starts here this meet and has already won an event for this owner. This one is a closer and should be running late. Chance. Mendel’s Secret (2) is a longshot possibility and the barn wins with .17% of the last 403 to have this type of vacation from the gate duties. Gets the world’s top rider. Dangerous off the bench. I bet the 6 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 6-7 over/under the 2-4-11-5-3 in two smaller units.

5th: 6/3-10/5-7-9-11-12-(14)/4/1…The first of the day and final of the meet comes the Key Play of the Day — Sistina Chapel (6). This 2YO daughter of Liam’s Map will make the 2nd start for a trainer who truly excels at the 2nd try. Wins with .33% of the last 21 to make the 2nd try over the grass. Sharp work on Sept. 2. Barn’s go-to rider gets the assignment. Won’t take much improvement to rally late here. I bet the 6 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 6 over/under the 3-10-5-7-9-11-12 in the exactas. More with the 3-10 than the rest.

6th: 9-5-6/3-4/8-10/1-7//2…Main Event (9) is my first and last Upset Special of the Day. this 4YO son of Bernardini is bred for the sod and th edam has toss 2 turf winners from the first 6 starters. This one won a G3 at Delaware a year go and looks to be rounding back into form now. Chance at a nice price. Ever Smart (5) is another huge longshot possibility. This one is listed at 20-1 in the ML, but ships here for a world-class trainer. Gets this meet’s top rider on an annual basis and should love the going. Barn wins with .19% of the last 100 to ship into a race. Win for the Money (6) ran a very credible 5th in the G1 Arlington Million at Colonial Downs last out. Before that had won two in a row. Chance. I bet the 9-5 across the board and box the top 3 in the exactas. Hoping to score some boxcars. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 3-4 in two smaller units, as well.

7th: 1-(15)-(13)/11-8/12/4-5-9-10…This could be a key race if the two from the AE List do not draw into the body of the race. If that occurs, I will gear up with Sahiabiya (1). If you are wondering, this daughter of Medaglia d’Oro cost a hefty $1.6 million at the 2020 KEE September Yearling Sale. Wow. Has won nearly $150,000 in purses. Long way to go but this one has hit the board in 7 of 8 lifetime. Only miss was in a Stakes last time out at Ellis Park. This one needs Lasix, IMO. Gets it back here. Watch out. I bet the 1 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will key the 1 over/under the 15-13-11-8-12-4 in the exactas. More with the 15-13-11-8 than the rest.

8th: 5-9-2/6-7-8/1/3-4-10…Juvenile Sprint Stakes…This is a 6.5-furlong speed match for the 2YOs, and I will give the strong lean to Good Lord Lorrie (5). Trainer is sneaky good and this one captured the first test up at Saratoga in mid-August. Son of Hard Spun should like this extra distance and the uphill climb in the stretch, too. Looks very solid. Bledsoe (9) is a 2YO gelding and named after the former Boston Patriots (yes, Boston) great quarterback. Won the debut at KEE in April over the main track. Not seen at the track since. Training solidly. Has speed. Is dangerous. Jimmythetooth (2) is a NY-bred who could have stayed home and run against softer. Comes here. Bears watching. I bet the 5 across the board and double down on the win wager. I box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. And, I will key the 5 over/under the 9-2-6-7-8-1 in two smaller units.

9th: 6-12-7/11-8/1-9-10-2/4/(13)-(14)-(15)-3…Pepsi Untapable Stakes…This is the gal’s version and restricted to the 2YO fillies. I go with Hidden Class (6). This daughter of Catalina Cruiser comes in off a win here, earlier in the meet. Obviously, will face tougher here but horses that love this track, normally love this track again. My pick. Solidly. Crown Imperial (12) could spice up these odds a bit. Has never missed the board in 4 carer starts and has excelled since being moved to the sod, too. Nearly won a Stakes at Saratoga last out. Look out here, even though I would have preferred the last rider had stayed aboard. Song of Norway (7) was super impressive at Ellis Park. Ran off with a speed burst. Must improve, though, against these types. May be overbet, too. I bet the 6-12 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the 6-12 over/under the 11-8-1-9-10-2-4 in two smaller units.

10th: 9-10-(13)/2-5-3-6/7-11…The meet’s finale is a 6.5-furlong sprint for the MSW level. I go with Kara and Colleen (9). This 3YO Bolt d’Oro fillet has run two nice 2nds in a row and could have won either. Speedster needs to find another gear late, but the cut back in distance here may help. Barn wins with .12% of the last 90 to try the sod for the first time, too. Fancy Caber Neigh (10) has run two good ones in a row and looks to have speed, as well. if the top two picks enter into a speed duel? OMG. Sets it up nicely for a closer? Skip to The Beat (13) and Last Glimmer (2) could fit that description. I bet the 13-2 across the board and then box the 9-10-13-2 in the exactas. I will key the 13-2 over/under the 9-10-5-3-6 in two smaller units.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
