(Stats to be updated after KY Downs’ card on Saturday, Sept. 9)

Here’s our looks at the card over the hills and dales of Kentucky Downs. So sorry we have not done well, to date. But a couple of good days came make up for a host of poor choices. Or so I keep telling myself.

We are trying…Believe it or not…

1st: 7-5/4-6/1-3-(13)/11/12/2-8…Equal Protection (7) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter at the roaming grounds of KY Downs on this Sunday Funday at the all-grass oval. This 3YO son of Maclean’s Music comes from a dam who has tossed one turf winner already. This one will get Irad Ortiz, Jr up, too and that should be a huge help. Gets first start for KY-based trainer, who win with .15% of the last 199 to make the first start for the new digs…Mr McGregor (5) will make the 6th try at breaking the MSW. Has a couple of 2nds on the resume and should appreciate the new pilot here, if he stays awake for the entire trip. Son of Into Mischief has the breeding for the first try on grass. But the HOF trainer wins with only .07% trying sod for the first time. Ugh. I bet the 7 across the board and then box the 7-5 in the exactas. I will key the 7-5 over/under the 4-6-1-13-11-12 in two smaller units.

2nd: 6-9/7-3/12-(13)-11-(16)/2-(14)-(15)/8-5…Plumeria (6) will make the 2nd career start here after nearly breaking the MSW on first ask on Aug. 13. Should benefit from that experience and be spot on here. Rider is having a good run in KY these days. One to beat, IMO. Smooth Waves (9) has run three 5ths in a row to begin the career. Last one was over a “good” track at Saratoga. Now, will probably catch a hard surface here. Rider is top notch over these grounds. Look out here. I bet the 6-9 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 6-9 over/under the 7-3-12-13-11-16-2 in two smaller units.

3rd: 9-(14)-10/7-8-6-4/2//1-3-5-12-(13)…American Diamond (9) is back from the Islands now and will make the first start since May. Barn wins with a whopping .25% of the last 313 when away from the gate this long. Has a 2-0-4 mark in 11 turf experiences, to date. Take a good look here. Stride (14) is another from the same barn and could be formidable if this one were to draw in from the AE List. Won the last outing. Forrest City (10) will get first grass test here. Barn does NOT excel with this surface switch. But this one looks like he could be a handful. I bet the 9 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 9 over/under the 14-10-7-8-6-4-2 in two smaller units.

4th: 12-6/1-8-2-10/7/5-9-11…Truly Quality (12) goes for a barn operation that is having a super year — winning with .26% of 109 starts. Has gone 2-for-7 here. Gets a solid grass rider to take the irons and has never been worse than 2nd in any of the first 3 outings. Lots to like here. Lots. I bet the 12 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 12-6 in the exactas. Sternly. I will key the 12 over/under the 6-1-8-2-10-7 in two smaller units.

5th: 6-12-3/8-7/1-11-4-(15)-(13)/(14)/9/2-5…Quality Star (6) is a 4YO daughter of Animal Kingdom and should relish this track and distance. Trainer is super good. Learn about him. Horses look great. Every time. Has won with .40% here this meet and .19% of the last 268 this year. Soft Touch (12) ships in off a long layoff. Has hit the board in the last 3 outs and has a 2-4-1 mark in 8 starts. Gives all. Every time. Like the last work at Delaware Park. A lot. Ready. Eminent Victor (3) is the heavy ML favorite and will get the meets hottest rider. Trainer still blanked here this meet and that may be a first for this outfit. I bet the 6-12 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 6-12 over/under the 3-8-7-1-11-4 in two smaller units.

6th: 4-(16)-2/10-1/9-8-7-6-12-(14)/3-11…Up and Down (4) is truly the name of this game and sport. In nearly every sense of the words. This 3YO filly will make the first start for the new barn operation, which does well with grass runners. Has won with .15% of the last 1,100 sod starts. Looks ready for peak performance here. Candle (16) could contend with a late run if this 3YO City of Light filly were to draw in from the AE List. Love the breeding here. Reflexivity (2) could assist in a big day for this trainer. This filly is an Irish-bred and should love the surface. Win at Belmont Park in May was spot on. Spot. On. I bet the 4-2 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 4-2 over/under the 16-10-1-9-8-7-6-12-14 in two smaller units.

7th: 7-6/11-10/(14)-(13)/8-9/5-(15)-(16)…In a Jam (7) ran huge last time out and should go off as the PT favorite here. This 2YO colt has speed and really gook to the Ellis Park grass last outing. Will need to find more stamina. Trainer is running on grass…not AW? Interesting. Mourne Mountains (6) is my first Upset Special Alert. This 2YO Malibu Moon filly flashed speed in the first start and tired. Got a little vacation after that for a top barn operation. Now, this gal gets a HOF rider up and returns as a beaten favorite. Brisnet.com makes this one 8-1 in the ML? Wish we could get those odds. I bet the 6 — take note — across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 7-6 in the exactas. I will key the 6 over/under the 7-11-10-14-13-8-9-5 in two smaller units.

8th: 4-(14)/1-8-11/6-9-10/2/3-7…Be My Sunshine (4) didn’t run great when switched to the AW after three really nice runs over the sod. Gets back to the grass here. Should elevate this one’s chances. Trainer doing well here this abbreviated meet and gets the meet’s top rider up. Lots to like here. I’m in. All in. I bet the 4 across the board and then key the 4 over/under the 14-1-8-11-6-9-10-2 in the exactas. More with the 14-1-8-11.

9th: 2-3/12-7-11-8/9-1-4-5/6…Juvenile Stakes…This is a $500,000 Stakes for the 2YO colts and I ante up with the “House Horse” — Aspenite (2). This son of Constitution is still a maiden, but just missed in the last outing and could be the real deal. Works good. Races solid. Speed galore. Got to find more up the last hill, but has real talent. Tough Little Nut (3) is 20-1 in the ML and I rate this one with a real shot at huge odds, potentially. This trainer knows when and where to race. This one comes off impressive win in Chicago. Much tougher company here, to be sure. But this one may be the toughest. May be. I bet the 2-3 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 2-3 over/under the 12-7-11-8-9-1-4-5 in two smaller units.

10th: 7-10-8/4-1-6-9-2-5/11…$500,000 Global Tote Juvenile Fillies Stakes…This is the same version, just limited to the gals. I go with a spread attack here, led by Latte Lizzie (7). This one goes for a top trainer, who is still looking for win #1 here this meet. Law of averages. But this outfit is way too good to go “zero” for long. Plus? This one ran very well in the debut, despite lots of traffic issues. Rider switch here is immense. Immense. Look out. Kodiac Wintergreen (10) has run two very nice races in New York and ships here for the first Stakes try. Barn wins with .16% when going to a route distance for the first time. Rider sticks here. Dangerous. Bella Haze (8) could add some spice to the odds rack. Has run two good ones and now moves to the sod for the first time. Has plenty of grass sire power in the pedigree. Sire is a son of Scat Daddy. Dam is a daughter of Ghostzapper. Hmmm. I bet the 7-8 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 7-8 over/under the 10-4-1-6-9-2-5 in two smaller units.

11th: 4-1-12/6-(16)/5-11/3/7-8-9…Tunisian Spring (4) is another upset possibility, although the odds may drop here before the gate flies. This 3YO gelded son of Violence will make the career debut and is training very well for a top trainer — who wins with .28% of the last 319 to make the debut. Wins with .20% of the last 143 to debut on the sod, too. Lots to like. Including a fine HOF rider. Babe Longue (1) should improve here off a solid run at Saratoga on July 15. Has speed. Sunset Town (12) is a longshot possible. Gets Lasix for the first time and it looks like he could use if, looking at the first career start on Oct. 21 of 2022 at KEE. Working fine. Son of Speightstown. (I love Speightstown.) Chance. I bet the 4-12 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 4-12 over/under the 1-6-16-5-11-3 in two smaller units.
