(Stats need to be updated after KY Downs’ card on Saturday)

Here’s our looks at a super card of racing at Kentucky Downs on Sunday:

st: 5-3/11-9/4-(14)-10/6-(15)/2-7…Frontline Warrior (5) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter over the hills and dales of scenic Kentucky Downs. This 2YO son of War Front is out of a Stakes-winning mare and should love, love, love this sod. Ran well before tiring in the inaugural run at Saratoga back on July 29. HOF trainer wins with .20% of the last 443 to ship into a new jurisdiction. Work on Aug. 26 was spot on. All things point to the right spot. Hanalei Bay (3) is a son of the great Into Mischief and that, alone, rates a shot. Ran very well over in Virginia on the first try. Gets a top rider for a top grass trainer, too. Show horse in the first one came right back to win, too. I bet the 5 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 5-3 in the exactas. Sternly. I will key the 5-3 over/under the 11-9-4-14-10-6 in two smaller units.

nd: 1-(16)-8/3-7-10/11-(13)-(14)/2-10-(15)…Best Performer (1) nearly won the first race last time out before tiring mightily at the end of that one. Now, connections cut back to 7-furlongs. Nice move. Gets a rider who has experience here before, too, and loves to travel this course. Solid. Le Beau (16) is parked on the outside of the outside and looking way in from the AE List. Probably no way she gets in. If she does? Look out. Junoesque (8) rates a shot here in the first ask. Rider choice is very interesting. Not known for this grass riding. I bet the 1-16 across the board and then box the top three numbers in the exactas. I will key the 1-8 over/under the 3-7-10-11 in two smaller units.

rd: 7-2/5/4-3//8/1…Let My People Go (7) has to be rated on top after the last 3 races and 4 of the last 5. Won two of those and could have been more with a little luck. Barn doesn’t win a lot — especially with the stock that she is given. But this one rates a huge shot here. Sharp work on Aug. 25 doesn’t hurt the cause. Purple Dream (2) goes for a highly underrated trainer, who can teach and coach with the best in the game today. This 5YO looks to be on the improve and rates a shot here. I bet the 7-2 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 7-2 over/under the 5-4-3 in two smaller units.

th: 1-2-8/(14)-(15)-(16)-7-6/12-(13)/9/4-11…Fearless Solider (1) is 6-1 in the Brisnet.com ML, and I love that. Doubt we get those odds, but this 3YO son of City of Light has the pedigree to be a huge threat here. Dam has thrown a turf winner (speaking of this one) and I can toss the last one over a “good” grass course at Saratoga. Good? Really? King Curlin (2) has run 4 good ones in a row and this trainer does a heckuva job. Wins with .23% of the 137 starts this year and the hubby comes in to ride. Lots to like here. Barn wins with .36% of those returning to the gate as a beaten favorite, too. Tulchan (8) goes for another top grass trainer. Man doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Wins with .20% of the last 514 to start over the sod. Wow. I bet the 1-2 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 1-2 over/under the 8-14-15-16-7-6 in two smaller units.

th: 7-6-4/11/5-10/(15)-(16)-12/2-3-9…Talonnade (7) ran a much-better-than-looks 4th in the first out at Laurel back on Aug. 11. Came with a strong late run in that one. Rider is talented. Don’t dismiss. Daughter of Tapit has the pedigree galore. Block Trade (6) goes for the first time, but comes from the barn of Chad Brown. Wins with .18% of the last 272 to make the debut on the sod. Top rider up. Threat. Pendulum (4) is one from the Godolphin team and has been training lights out for this first effort. Must look here, too. I bet the 7 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 over/under the 11 in two smaller units.

th: 3-9/8-5/7/6//1-2…Strong Odor (3) is one of the best names in the history of the game, especially considering that the sire is Strong Mandate and the dam is Tuna. Perfect. This one can run some, too. Has a 2nd in only previous try here and comes in off a win at Saratoga. Lots to like with this one right now. Aaliyah Ezri (9) has hit the board in each of the last 3 and 4 of the last 5. Barn wins with .18% in the claiming ranks. Rider is coming off terrific meet at Ellis Park. Chance. I bet the 3 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 3-9 in the exactas. I will key the 3 over/under the 9-8-5-7-6 in two smaller units.

th: 8-(13)/1-7/3-10-12/(16)/6/5/2-11-(14)…Swore (8) is a long-distance marathoner with expertise. Even money in the ML, and looks to  be much the best on paper. Must run this one over the grass, though, and all things can happen here. Last race was spot on. Just missed. May not miss here. Smart Uncle (13) would be a smart choice if the 3YO gelding can get in from the AE List. In fact, this one would be my betting choice. I bet the 13 — if it gets in — across the board and double down on the win wager. If not? I bet the 8 to win/place and key the 8 over/under the 1-7-3-10-12 in the exactas.

th: 4-8-7/9-10-1/2-5/3/6…Sicillian Grandma (4) moves up after a win in the claiming ranks at Saratoga last time out. That was taken off the sod, and this one never has won over a turf surface. Interesting. But looks good right now and the barn does win with .13% of the last 366 to make this surface switch. Strand of Gold (8) is 10-1 in the ML and goes for an interesting barn operation, which has had its’ name in the news here before this year. This one didn’t have the best of trips last time out and I can toss that one. Look two races back. Nice. Chance here. Windy Bay (7) goes for a trainer who knows how  to get them ready and where to spot them, too. This one has been 2nd three times in a row. Would not be a surprise here. I bet the 8-7 across the board — take note — and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the top 3 over/under the 9-10-1 in two smaller units.

th: 3-6-7/12/(13)-(16)-5-10-2/9-4-8-(14)/11…Fort Washington (3) gets the nod here for me, and this barn could have a huge, huge, huge day. Son of War Front should love this surface and this one knows how to close over a track that favors closers. I am on board here, if the rider doesn’t figure out a way not to win. Golden Alchemist (6) goes for Chad Brown and this one has a ton of ability, it appears. Has not been out since February, so conditioning is an issue — especially with the uphill finish. Point Me By (7) can close, too, and rates a shot here. Rider is having a strong summer on the grass courses in the Midwest and has won with .43% of the last 14 for this barn. Wow. I bet the 3-7 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 12 in two smaller units.

th: 12-4-5/11/7-4/10-3-8/1-6…$1 Million Dueling Grounds Oaks…This 15/16-mile marathon for the 3YO fillies is a super race, and I go with Selenaia (12). This 3YO Irish-bred lost her footing and speed in the G3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational last time out. A total toss for me. The three races before over firm footing? All wins. Love the 6-1 ML odds and this one’s chances for a top barn operator. I bet the 12 across the board and then double/triple down on the win wager. I will box the top 3 numbers in the exactas as an insurance policy, but I will lean into the 12 key over/under the 4-5-11-7-4-10-3-8 in two more units.

th: 9-10/1/6-7/3-12-8-11/4/2…$1 Million Dueling Grounds Derby…What a race…Seriously. This is big time. Far Bridge (9) has to figure on top after nearly winning the G1 Saratoga Derby and, before that, winning the G1 Belmont Derby. This one has never missed the board in 6 lifetime tries over the grass and has 3 wins. Nice. Should be stalking close and has the kick to kick on. Battle of Normandy (10) is my Upset Special of the Day and, perhaps, my Upset Special of the Year. This one is listed at 20-1 in the Brisnet.com ML. I’d take half of those odds right now. This son of City of Light has run nearly half of his races over soft, yielding and giving ground. Ground, in other words, that he does NOT like. Still, he has thrown up some impressive runs, despite having only the one win. Has faced some good ones in the past and gets a top rider for this course, of course. Love the weight allowance here. Take note of that. It could be very important. And…Love this guy. Red Route One (1) should love this track, where he has already won over. Coming off a G3 win over the dirt. Has lots of ability and can close deep. Can’t dismiss. I bet the 10 — take note — across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 9-10-1 solidly in the exactas. And, I will key the 10 over/under the 9-1-6-7-3-12-8-11 in two smaller units.

th: 8-9/1-2/5-4-3-10//6/7…The finale is a very nice handicap race and I go with another longshot here, too — Field Pass (8). This 6YO has never hit the board in two previous tries over this track, but has been facing some serious competition in those, as well. Love the rider switch here. Love it. And, this one does have 8 wins in 31 grass tries. Can mow. Fuerteventura (9) could make this a very nice exacta box to end the day. This one has hit the board in three in a row and 5 of the last 6. Has 2 wins and 3 seconds in that grouping. Good right now and may just be ready for another top effort. I bet the 8-9 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 8-9 over/under the 1-2-5-4-3-10 in two smaller units.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
