A solid night at the ole’ oval that is now called the “new and improved” Turfway Park. Three winners on the 8-race card, but our top pick returned positive results in 5 races. We also hit exactas that returned the likes of $11.40, $30.50, $12.00, $16.00 for each $1 played.

We had two seconds in our two “Key Plays of the Night.”

Hoping for more tonight and this weekend. Here’s our looks for Friday night:

1st: 7-9-4/6/1-5/2-3/8…Top Hat Voyager (7) gets the nod in the lid-lifter. This 5YO gelded son of Verrazano comes in off a 3rd here on Feb. 24. Deep closer was 2nd the time before. In 5 previous starts here, this one has a second and three thirds. Look for more tonight, if this one can find a clear path in the lane. New rider can finish a race. Summerduck (9) is a speed-oriented type who will try to take them coast-to-coast. Has worked very well over this new surface. Goes for a trainer who is 0-for-31 over the past two years and the rider is 3-for-81 this meet. Hmmm. Stay in Yo Lane (4) is another deep closer. Ran a super 2ndd here on Jan. 22. In 8 starts over this track, this one has a 2-2-1 record. Looks like a possibility here, too. I bet the 7-4 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the top 3 over/under the 6 in two smaller units. I will also key the 7-4 over/under the rest of the numbers listed.

2nd: 4-6-9/8-2-7-5/1…Brunella (4) will add the blinkers for the first time tonight and the barn wins with .18% of those. This 4YO daughter of Munnings will drop to an all-time low price tag here, as well. Barn wins with 1 of 2 that drops this much at once. Gets a rider who has won with only previous mount for his barn. One to beat. Guilder (6) broke the maiden last time out here on Jan. 14 for a $15,000 tag. Will face winners for the first time tonight, and the barns wins with .13% of those. But will drop to a career low price level, too. Gets a solid hand on the reins, and this one does have some speed to burn early. Sunny One (9) gets the services of top rider Chris Landeros back in the saddle. Won the last time out here on Jan. 2. Barn winning at a .48% clip here this meet with 23 starters. Rider has won with 7 out of 10 for this trainer, too. Steps up to face winners for the first time, also, and the barn wins with .25% of the last 53 to try that task. I bet the 4-9 across the board, and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the 4-9 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller units.

3rd: 1-8/5-6-9/2-4-3…Souper Highvoltage (1) goes for HOF trainer Steve Asmussen, who claimed this one just two starts back. After a try against tougher, this 4YO Florida-bred is back at the same level where he won at two starts ago. Should be able to tend to these types better tonight. Look for more from a horse that has 2 wins in 5 starts over an AW surface. Old Timer’s Day (8) has nearly won the last two at this same price level. Lost by less than a length in both of those — combined. Gets a new rider for this challenge and the jockey is winning at a meet-high .26% of his 170 mounts to date. Has been off since early December, and that is a concern. Barn is 0-for-10 when away this long. I bet the 1 to win/place/show and then box the top 2 in the exacta. I will key the top 2 numbers over/under all the rest in two smaller units.

4th: 8-1/5-1A/2-3-4/7-6-9…Flat Meadow (8) drops another rung in the claiming game to the bargain bin. Has never raced at this low a tag before. And, this 6YO War Chant mare should fit nicely in these ranks. Gets a top rider in the saddle, and he is 3-0-3 in the last 12 outings. Has run two good ones here and should be a tough out tonight. No Interest (1) has a record of 6-4-3 in 18 career starts over the AW surface, and nearly won at this same level here on Jan. 8. Has speed, too, and will likely push the early pace from the rail. Cut back to this super sprint distance may be interesting. Look out. I bet the 8-1 across the board and then box the top two in the exacta. I will key the top 2 over/under the rest of the numbers in two smaller units.

5th: 3-4-2/1-6-8/10-9-7/5-11…Menzel (3) is my first “Key Play of the Night.” And, this one is 5-1 in the ML. Wow. Last time out, this one dropped from the MSW level to this claiming price tag. Slow start but caught fire late. Gets the Lasix for the 2nd time tonight and the barn wins with .19% of those. Rider has won with .20% for his father-in-law / trainer. Look for this daughter of Tiznow to be a tough out in here, too. Vale of Evesham (4) ran poorly last time out when shipped to upper Ohio. Back on the AW tonight, and this one nearly won here on Feb. 5. Beaten just a neck at the wire in there. In two starts over the AW, this one shows a true “Z Pattern.” Love those kind. Lulus In Charge (2) is a first time starter for Michael Stidham, who wins with .19% other last 48 to begin the career in the MCL ranks. Dam of this one has a winner from 2 starters and the rider is 5-1-3 in the last 20 outs. Threat. I bet the 3-4 across the board and then box the top three in the exacta. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 1-6 in two smaller units. I will also key the 3-4 over/under the 2-1-6-8-10-9-7 in two smaller units, too.

6th: 3-1/6-5/4-7…California Lily (3) goes for a HOF trainer, who has won with .20% of his 59 mounts here this meet. Gets a top rider for this occasion and will make the first start since Jan. 1 when racing at Gulfstream Park. Won the career debut when racing over the AW for the first and only time. Should adopt and adapt to this surface, too. Working great here. My pick. Song of Innocence (1) goes for a top trainer / rider combo. They have teamed up to go 7-for-10 this meet. Won the last time out at the MSW level and will face winners for the first time tonight. Major threat. I bet the 3-1 across the board and then box those two sternly in the exacta. Sternly. I will key the 3-1 over/under the rest of the numbers listed in two smaller units.

7th: 8-9/6-2-1-5/3-7/4…Moonlight Rain (8) is another from the barn of Mark Casse, and this one should appreciate the class drop for this encounter. Barn wins with .21% over the AW surfaces, and the rider has won with .23% of the last 13 mounts for this operation, too. Will be rolling late. Record over the AW for this one? Has a 3-2-1 resumer in 9 career starts. Pick. Solar Kitten (9) has raced just once since September, and ran a better-than-looks 5th here on Feb. 25. Barn is new, but this one should improve in the 2nd start off the layup and the rider has been scoring at huge odds of late. Threat. I bet the 8 to win/place/show and then box the top 2 in the exacta. I will key the top 2 over/under the rest of the numbers in two smaller units.

8th: 1-7-10/9-6/5-4/11-8…Derby Model (1) will make the career debut in tonight’s finale. Barn has won with .28% of its’ 60 runners so far this meet. Rider has won with .32% of the 19 mounts for this barn, too. Dam has a winner from two starters and this one just figures in this spot. Don’t like the rail for the initial start. But? May have the speed to burn them. Mr. Banyan (7) goes at this claiming level for the 2nd time, but gets a huge rider switch for this effort. Works are good of late and it looks like this could be the night to celebrate. Rider is 3-3-0 in the last 10 mounts. Perfect Painting (10) drops to half the price tag that he ran at here on Feb. 25. Gets the blinkers for the first time tonight, and the barn wins with .07% of those. Works are good of late. Could be a threat with a better start than the debut run. I definitely use. I bet the 1-10 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the top 3 over/under the 9-6 in two smaller. I will key the 1-10 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller, as well.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
