Despite the slow start in the win column at the new and improved Turfway Park’s Holiday Meet, we managed to boot home 3 winners on the card Friday night, and added four more exactas that hand rather handsome returns.

We’re hoping to kick in a bit stronger as we head to the big holiday on the calendar, and we need a few extra $ to buy the grandkids a few goodies to have under the tree so green.

Here’s our looks for this first Saturday afternoon matinee. Hope we enjoy…

1st: 9-4-1/6/5/3-7//2-8…Kanfu (9) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter this afternoon at the new and improved Turfway Park. This 5YO Indiana-bred mare has been running against open company in Chicago and holding her own, quite nicely. This year, she has a 1-2-1 record in just 6 starts and has run 2nd in the last two after a win three starts ago. I’m in. Conundrum Queen (4) ran 3rd against tougher up at The Meadowlands in October. Before that, three starts ago, she ran 3rd at Monmouth Park, too. Should appreciate the drop in class here and this barn wins with .31% when getting this type of class relief at one time. Chance. Complete (1) has a 1-1-1 record in 6 previous tries over this surface and the barn wins with a nice .22% when making the 3rd start off a layup. Consider — especially with this rider up. I bet the 9-1 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 number over/under the 6-5 in two smaller units.

2nd: 1-10/7-2/8-5-6/11/4/9…My Man Flintstone (1) faced O’Besos just two starts ago and if not for some unfortunate luck, the latter would be racing in the G1 Cigar Mile today. So…take another look here. In 3 starts over this track, this one has a win and a 2nd, too. Looks tough in this spot, to be sure. Bless the Kitten (10) has hit the board in the last 4 and has not been worse than 2nd in any of those. Has speed and will use it early and often. Can they catch her? I bet the 1 across the board and double down on the win wager, as well. I will box the 1-10 in the exactas. I will key the 1-10 over/under the 7-2-8-5-6 in two smaller units.

3rd: 4-10-9/3-2-7/6-8…Peaceful Moment (4) gets the nod here. the 2YO daughter of Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing ran a very nice 2nd last time out at this same level. This one gets a new rider and we will see how that works out. Rider is 0-2-1 in the first 11 mounts this meet. Dam of this one has produced 9 winners out of 12 starters. Jayla (10) goes for a top trainer and will be a threat if this one can make the trip. Gets a top rider up here for the mount. Jockey has gone 3-1-1 in the first 9 rides this meet. Big Philly (9) could be a real threat for the new trainer at PTK owners. Won one on Friday night. Trainer wins with .27% when opening up at the MCL ranks. I bet the 4 across the board and then box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 4 over/under the 10-9-3-2-7 in two smaller units.

4th: 5/6-7-10/3-9-11-8/2-4…Decree of Love (5) is the first “Key Play of the Day.” This 3YO daughter of Declaration of War has run two really good 2nds in a row and now drops to a career low price tag for a top barn operator. Gets a rider who is doing well for this barn at the meet and they should be the front-runners from the get-go. I bet the 5 across and double down on the win wager. I will key the 5 over/under the 6-7-10-3-9-11-8 in the exactas. More with the 6-7-10 than the rest.

5th: 7-(14)/6-12-5-9/3-8/2-10…If the #14 does not draw in from the AE List in this one, I will have my second “Key Play of the Day.” I love Miss Peabody (7) in this spot. The 2YO daughter of Anchor Down comes in off a near-miss 2nd in the slop at Churhcill Downs last time out. Went 4-wide in that one, too. Just got caught on the wire by a nose hair. If she can duplicate that effort here? Look out. If Moment to Shine (14) does draw in, then it complicates matters and by a considerable amount. This 2YO daughter is by one of the hottest freshmen sires in the world and ran a very nice 3rd on debut at Churchill Downs in mid-November. Gets a hot, hot rider, too. So? If there is a #14, then I bet them both across the board and box them sternly in the exactas. If there is no #14, then I single the 7 and play across the board and double down on the win wager. I will key the 7-14 over/under the 6-12-5-9 in the exactas, too.

6th: 9-6/8-5/7-1/2/3…Push Button (9) is another top prospect from the barn of Mike Maker, who is off to an outstanding start to the meet. Has gone 2-1-1 in the first 8 starts here. This one picks up the hottest rider in the circuit and has the speed to dominate here. More Than Work (6) comes form the barn of Brad Cox and ships in from NY where he has been training of late. Has not run since February, though, and may need a start to fine tune the engine. In 4 starts to date, though, this one has 2 seconds and a third. Talent there. I bet the 9 across the board and then box the 9-6 sternly in the exactas. I will key the 9-6 over/under the 8-5-7-1-2 in two smaller units.

7th: 10-9-4/8-(13)-(14)/2-7-1/5-6-12//3-11…Holiday Inaugural Stakes…This is the first Stakes event of the meet and it will be contested at 6 furlongs for the fillies and mares 3YOs and up. Very nice and salty field assemble here by Dan Bork. Nice. I give the edge to Fire On Time (10), if this one can make the trip. This 4YO daughter of Not This Time has a world of speed and a ton of talent. Has won 3 in a row and 4 of the last 5. Could add another if she makes the gate. Ready to Venture (9) ships up from training at the Fair Grounds and could be a tough out here. In 2 previous starts over AW tracks, this one has a perfect 2 wins. Will come with a rush and gets the meet’s top rider in the irons. Thundering Creed (4) is another who has been training at Churchill Dows and may be under orders to stay there. But if she is out, then she has a shot here. Has run 3 times here over this Tapeta surface and has 2 wins and a 3rd on the resume. Look out here. I bet the 9 — take note — across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 9 over/under the 10-4-8-13-14-2-7-1 in the exactas. More with the top 3/4 numbers in that sequence.

8th: 12-11/2-6-(14)/1-3-7-8-(13)/9/5-10…The finale of the day is a 6.5-furlong optional-claimer that has attracted a nice field. I will lean to the outside and ante up with Gagetown (12), who may be a square price for trainer Mark Simms. This one drops into the claiming ranks and that should help immensely. Barn is a perfect 1-for-1 when going dirt to AW and this one is training very nicely. I’m in. Bohemian Boy (11) ships in from Woodbine, where he has a world of experience over AW surfaces from training. Has raced over it twice. Has a win. This one is pure speed and they all will need to catch. I bet the 12-11 across the board and then box these two sternly in the exactas. I will key the 12-11 over/under the 2-6-14-1-3 in two smaller units.
