Leap year. Leap day. Leap for joy. Another great day in the month of February. And, another great day for racing.
We only managed two winners out of the eight carded at Turfway Park on Friday night, but…
There’s always a “but,” right?
This “but” was a good “but.”
In addition to the two winners, we scored 4 exactas on Friday night, as well. Three of them paid $12.60, $10.00 and $22.00 for each $1 dollar plunked.
The fourth? It returned a whopping $128.20 for each $1 played. And, we had more than $1 played.
Looking for more sweetness tonight. Here’s a look at our picks for tonight:
1st: 8-4/1-5-2…Stylish Kitten (8) was very competitive in the career debut here on Feb. 13. Came with a nice run along the rail in that one to get 3rd. The barn hits with .21% in the second route race and with .17% with the second career start overall. The rider has won with .40% of the 30 runners for this barn this meet. Runner-up in the initial start came right back to win the next outing. Looks very solid in this spot and the $10,000 price tag may be a bargain for this daughter of Kitten’s Joy. Belle Magie (4) drops for half the price tag that she ran at last time out. Never been offered for his law of a price before. Gets a huge jock switch for this one and the barn is hot right now. Has teamed up with this rider to go 2-1-0 in the last 4 starts together over the last two weeks. Watch out. I bet the 8 to win/place/show and then box the 8-4 in one exacta. I will key the 8-4 over (only) the 1-5-2.
2nd: 9-8/5-3-2/1-4-7/6…Valycove (9) drops to the bargain bin for this outing after running OK against tougher here last time out just a week ago. Wheels right back and may like the turnaround. Will be closing late for a barn that has a 1-0-1 record here in just 5 starts this meet. Has a win over this track, too, going back to December — and that one was against much, much, much better. My pick. I bet the 9 to win/place/show and then box the 9-8 in the exacta. I will key the 9-8 over/under the 5-3-2-1-4-7 in two smaller versions.
3rd: 5/6-9-1…The first Key Play of the Night comes right here with My Maiko (5). This 4YO daughter of Magician is getting the saddle from a new head trainer that doubles as an assistant for Rusty Arnold. Nearly won at this level last time out. Nipped at the wire by less than 1. Rider is red hot these days, with a 3-1-1 record in the last 9 mounts. Look for this one to push the issues from the get-go. I bet the 5 to win/place/show and then key the 5 over/under the “all button.”
4th: 1-3-7/10-5-6/2-4…Keyed On Top (1) won here three races back off a bit of a layup. Ran against much better the next out and had no chance. Came back at this left last time out and never got a chance. Very awkward at the start of that one. If this one can correct the gate issues today, watch out? At Guard (3) has hit the board in each of the last three tries and is doing very well right now. In 9 career starts at this track, this one has a 2-3-3 record. Barn is having a solid meet and has won with .20% of the last 365 starters. The one to beat. Muny Me Too (7) goes for a barn operation that has won with .26% of the 34 starters here this meet. This Indiana-bred won here two races ago and ran OK against tougher last time out. Drops back in class a bit for this try and that may be enough to propel him back to prominence here. I bet the 3 — take note — to win/place/show and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the 1-3 over/under the 7-10-5-6-2 in the two smaller versions.
5th: (14)-10-(13)/5-2/6-11/1-8…High Powered (14) gets my check mark if the 4YO son of Shanghai Bobby makes the starting gate. Must have some luck just to get in from the AE List. This one drops to the bin after facing much tougher of late. Rider is the best at this meet and on a streak right now, too, with a 3-1-0 mark in the last 11 outs. If he doesn’t make the gate, then I convert to Mine N Yours (10) — who never mounted much of a challenge last time out. In 6 runs over this AW surface, though, this one has a win and a third. Look for more out of this one tonight. At a square price, too. I bet the 14 if he goes, if not the 10. I will box the top 3 numbers in the exacta — depending on if the 14-13 gets in.
6th: 12-2-8/11-4-10/(13)/1-3…Mikayla Attack (12) made the TP debut here last time out and this one ran off to a 41/2-length win. Came out of Hawthorne with some consistent runs up to that time. Has hit the board in each of the last 7 races now. Top rider takes the reins in tonight’s flash dash and the trainer is sneaky good. Has a 2-3-1 record in just 9 starters here. Don’t miss this one at a very square price. I bet the 12 to win/place/show and then box the top 3 numbers in the exacta. I will key the 12 over/under the 2-8-11-4-10-1-3 in two smaller versions. I use the 13 if she gets in, too.
7th: 1-1A-4/8-9/2-11/5-6…Only one half of this entry is likely to go tonight, considering that the same rider was named on each. But the “chosen one” does not really matter to me. I will stick with the 1 or 1A. I would prefer the 1, if given the choice. This 3YO son of Temple City is built for the AW surface and has been training super here, too. A top rider, who has won with .47% for the barn of Wesley Ward, takes the reins. I bet the 1-1A on top and across the board. I will box the 1-1A-4 in the exacta. I will key the 1-1A-4 over/under the 8-9-2-11-5-6 in two smaller versions. Would not shock to see either the 8 or 9 run a good one, too.
8th: 1-8/4-10/9-12-2/5-6-3…I’ll finish the night with the rail entry — Drama Run (1). This 5YO Big Drama mare nearly won here two races ago. Didn’t show much last time out as the favorite, but the barn hits with .29% of those that return as a beaten favorite. Meet’s top rider sticks with the saddle job. In 16 career starts over the AW surfaces, she has a 4-2-4 record. Nice. My choice. I bet the 1 to win/place/show and then box the 1-8 in the exacta. I will key the 1-8 over/under the 4-10-9-12-2-5 in two smaller versions.
