We landed on 4 winners on Friday night. Had 4 exactas to add to the mix. Nothing major. Nothing great. But we added a little to the coffers.
Here’s a look at tonight’s card. Abbreviated comments. Sorry.
1st: 7-5/10-6/2-3-8…Blackberry Lisa (7) gets the edge here. This 3YO daughter of Stroll has a second and a third in the first 4 career starts and drops for half the price tag tonight. That move should put this one in good company and boost chances to make the wire first for the first time. Love this barn operation, which hits with .20% when making this kind of a drop and with .23% over the AW. Look out. I bet the 7 to win/place/show and then box the 7-5 in one exacta. I will key the 7 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller units.
2nd: 4-9-8/3-6-1-7/10-5…Wide, wide, wide open race here. I will give the slight edge to Liner (4). This one came with a run late last time out on Feb. 29. Ran out of real estate in that one. Meet’s top rider stays up. This 4YO daughter of Exchange Rate has a 1-1-1 mark here. I go again. I bet the 4 to win/place/show and then box the top 4 in the exacta. I will key the 4 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller units.
3rd: 1-5-(13)/4-6-8-10/12-3-7/11-2-9…Another race that appears to have a number of possible contenders. I go with Statesboro (1) in this one, despite drawing what appears to be a dead rail. This one has the speed to be dangerous. Won last time out going wire to wire. Cut back should not hurt. Has 2 wins and 2 thirds in 4 races here. Has never won back to back. Hmm. I bet the 1 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the 1 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller units, as well.
4th: 8-1/11/6-4-7-5/2-10…Dreamin’ of Munny (8) goes for my great friend and top trainer Stephen Lyster. This one drops for half the price tag after running a very game second here on Feb. 22. If this one can get untracked a bit earlier, she should be a handful at the wire. My pick. Solid. I bet the 8 to win/place/show and then box the 8-1 in one exacta. I will key the 8-1 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller units.
5th: 6/1-2-9-8/11/3-5-13-4…My first Key Play of the Day comes right here with No Interest (6). This one drops off a game effort last time out on Feb. 14. Meet’s top rider is super hot right now, too, winning with 7 of the last 26 mounts. Add in 2 seconds and 2 thirds in that mix, too. Will make the 2nd start off the claim for a barn that hits with .31% of them that return as a beaten favorite. My pick. I bet the 6 to win/place/show and then key the 6 over/under the “all button.”
6th: 6-8/5-2/7-9/1-3…A disclaimer here. We were all set to return Miss Jacqueline (8) to the races tonight. But we missed a training session when she dumped the rider in the a.m. gate work, and then missed another along the way due to the weather. Entered for the 1-mile distance, which would have required more of her, too. With all that is going on, we decided that she just needed a little more time and another work or two to be optimum. Look for us in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, she will be more ready to rock. With her exit, I will go strong with my second Key Play of the Night. She’s Hot Today (6), who comes from the Phil Sims barn, too, looks the best here. Has a win over the track. Has been facing much better. Looks dangerous in this spot. I bet the 6 to win/place/show and then key the 6 over/under the rest of the numbers listed in the exactas.
7th: 11-10-3/2-1-8/9-7/6-5-(13)…Hemp Hemp Hurrah (11) draws the outside post here and that can be difficult, but gets a heady rider back in the irons and will be dropping down out of a Stakes event back in mid-January. If he can find that form again tonight? Look out. My choice. I bet the 11 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the 11 over/under all the numbers listed in two smaller units.
8th: 10-2/6-9/(13)…Tonight’s finale is a mystery for me. Had a hard time finding anyone that I could jump on and tout. I will go with a soft approach here and lean on Zipaway (10). This one comes from the barn of Wesley Ward, who is the meet’s top trainer and has won with .36% of the 72 starters. No sweat, right? But this one has not raced now in over 3 years. That is 3 years. Long layup, there. So, I entered with a smudge of trepidation. I bet the 10-2 across the board and then box those 2 in one exacta. I will key the 10-2 over/under the 6-9 in two smaller units. I will key the 2 over/under the “all button,” as well. Just in case.
Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
