We didn’t fare too well in the “win” department at the “new and improved” Turfway Park on Friday night. We managed to scrap together 2 winners out of the 8 races. Ugh.
There’s always a “but,” right?
But the “exactas” were big on Friday and they be “very good to us.” We hit 5 exactas that returned the likes of $31.50, $25.80, $54.30, $66.40 and a whopping $95.10 for each $1 played correctly. And, I hope you played along at home with us and plunked more than the simple $1.
It was huge.
So we travel into Saturday’s “cards” with a little cash to flow around. We provided some “bonus coverage” of the full card at Gulfstream Park earlier today. It’s found over at the “news department.” But we always handicap the “new and improved” Turfway Park.
Here’s our picks at TP:
1st: 10-1-8/4/6-9/7-2…Macagone (10) drops from the $16,000 tag all the way to the bargain bin tonight and this barn wins with .26% when plunging this much at one time. Wins with .19% when shipping into a new location, too. Gets a high-win jockey for the assignment. Could dominate here in this spot. I bet the 10 to win/place/show and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the top 3 over/under the 4 in two smaller units. I will key the 10 over/under the “all button” in two smaller, as well.
Pick 5: 10-1-8-4-6-9/7/6-5-3/7-12-2-6/2…=$36.00 for .50-cent ticket
Pick 5 “B:” 10/7-1-12-5-6-10/6-5-3/7-12-2-6/2…=$36.00 for .50-cent ticket
2nd: 7-1/12-5/(13)-(14)/6-10/8…To Kalon (7) gets the best rider in these parts and drops from the $15,000 level to the $7,500 tag tonight. With this barn, the rider has 7 mounts this meet. Has won with .86% of those. Looks salty here, too. I bet the 7 to win/place/show and then box the 7-1 in one exacta. I will key the 7 over/under all the numbers listed in two more.
3rd: 6-5-3/2-8-9-4/10-1-7…Escapeproof (6) bumps up in class tonight after a realy good run at the $7,500 level last time out. The barn wins with an impressive .29% when clicking up the ladder this much. Nice. Gets a top rider back up. My first Longshot Play of the Night. Joyful Praise (5) could be another longer price to hit the board here, too. This 3YO daughter of Kitten’s Joy goes for a barn that wins with .22% when making the 3rd start off the layup and this one ran really good here last time out. Moved up to 3rd after a DQ and had a lot of trouble in the late going. Lots of trouble. Can’t dismiss. Limonata (3) goes for a barn that is 0-for-21 this meet. Due. Drops from the $30,000 level to half the price tonight. Barn wins with .33% of those making the class drop that much at once. I bet the 6-5 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the top 3 over/under the 2-8 in two smaller units.
4th: 7-12/2-6/3-1/4-9-11/8-5…Nostalgia (7) goes for a trainer who having a very nice meet with limited runners and this one is coming off a performance that nearly ended up in the winner’s circle. Now, this one drops down another notch. Rider has been ice cold all meet, but this one has 5 seconds and 2 thirds in 15 career starts. Gets the blinkers for the first time. Trainer over the AW? Has won with .25% of 167 starters. Nice. Teller to Sing (12) drops from the MSW level to the $15,000 tag. Huge drop. Barn wins with .28% when making the third start off a layup, and this one will be closing late. A must use for me, too. I bet the 7-12 across the board and then box those two in the exacta. I will key the top 2 numbers over/under the 2-6-3-1-4-9-11 in two smaller units.
5th: 2/3-5/11-8-9-12/7-1-10…My first “Key Play of the Night” comes here with Until Now (2). This 3YO Verrazanno filly nearly won at this level last time out as a first-time starter. Lost by a stinking nose. Returns tonight with the same rider up and for the barn of Brad Cox. Looks formidable to me. I bet the 2 to win/place and then key the 2 over/under the numbers listed above. I will also key the 2 over (only) the “all button.”
6th: 3-4-9/7-2/6-1-10-11/5-12-8…Crazy Sexy Munny (3) has not run well in either of the last two outs. But? one of those was a G3 event at Churchill Downs. Will make the first start for a new barn operator after a claim purchase last time out. New barn operator wins with .28% on the first try and with .31% with those returning as a beaten favorite. Works are good. Should be much better here. In 12 tries over the AW? Has 8 wins. Two more seconds. Nice. Monkey Mind (4) is a “Longshot Special of the Night.” This one is 8-1 in the ML for Brisnet.com and if you look just two starts back, this one was a very close 2nd. Fell completely out of it last time out and never could make up much ground. Look for this one to be much closer to the pace setters here. Shot. I bet the 3 to win/place/show and then box the top 3 in the exacta. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 7-2 in two smaller units. I will key the 3 over/under all the numbers included, too.
7th: 7-8/11/2-3/4-6/5/9-1…Noren (7) goers for one of the hottest trainers in KY right now. This guy has won with .28% of the 39 runners saddled here, and he won the John Battaglia on Friday night. Has won the last two over this track and looks salty here, too. Trainer wins with .26% when routing for the first time and with .21% when his steed won the last race. Looks like he has the speed to be tough again. Choice. Kokokomo (8) is 15-1 in the ML odds and I think has a real chance here. Thus? Longshot Special of the Night. This one has not run since last August, when in the barn of Todd Pletcher. Ran in a turf Stakes at Gulfstream then. New trainer and the works are OK. I bet the 7-8 across the board and then box those two in the exacta. I will key the top 2 over/under the 11-2-3-4-6 run two smaller units.
8th: 12-11-1/(13)-10/8/5-7-9…La Negra Noche (12) draws the outside post for the nightcap, but this is another from the barn of William Morey, and anything from this barn rates a serious chance. Won the last time out and now drops off the win. Barn wins with half of those kind. Claimers trying to repeat? Barn wins with .27% of them. New rider and that doesn’t hurt, either. One to beat. Jazz Brunch (11) will beclouding late. Barn has had a very nice meet and in three previous tries here? This one has a win and a second. Chance. If Stolen Beauty (13) goes tonight? Huge chance. Has speed. I bet the 12-11 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exacta. If the 13 goes, I will bet the 12-13 instead. I will key the top 2 over/under the rest of the numbers in two lesser units.
