McLean’s Shopping Cart: A Look at Hips 150-300 at F-T July Yearling Sale

(Rob Murphy & Gene McLean at Churchill Downs last November for the Breeders’ Cup)

Today, we take another look at the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearling Sale, scheduled for Tuesday, July 9 at the sales agency’s premium facility in Lexington. Today, we concentrate on our “Shopping Cart” list from Hips 150 to 300.

And, we have found a few pedigree plums that pique the interest and catch the attention.

Of special interest, at least to me, is Hip 173 — an Orb colt out of the War Front mare Child Please. The dam is a full sister to Jack Milton and this sets up a very interesting cross from the Phipps Family breeding operation.

I have a Jack Milton 2YO filly, who I am very high on, as well. She is out of a Sightseeing mare, and is in training with young conditioner Stephen Lyster. I will be very interested to see how this one looks.

The other Hip that catches the attention, simply from the catalogue page, is Hip 225. This is a Tiznow filly out of a young Giant’s Causeway mare. Very nice broodmare sires dominate the page, and, once again, the female family of Jack Milton (back in the 4th dam). Interesting.

Will be fun to see some progeny by the young stallion Anchor Down, too. One that sticks out to me is Hip 224 — a gray filly out of a winning Speightstown mare.

The horse broke well today,” Gaffalione said. “I had the horse inside, Dunph, going to the lead and then (Gun It) showed a little bit of speed. When I saw they were intent on going I just tried to get him back and got him to relax. He came back to me nicely and settled well down the backside. Got a little keen going into the far turn and wanted to move a little early. But I didn’t want to take too much away from him so I tried to sit as long as I could. He was waiting on horses down the lane but I kept him at task and there was plenty of horse there.”

“Mark (Casse, the trainer) and his team have done a great job,” Gaffalione said. “They’ve had a ton of confidence in this horse the whole way. It’s just an honor to be able to ride the horse. He’s just so professional, trains great and he’s a pleasure to be around.”
