We didn’t have a great deal of luck picking winners in our four races down at KY Downs on Saturday. Have to admit.

But the one we hit?

Worth the wait.

Worth the the read.

And, darn well worth the bet.

In the One Dreamer Stakes, we did tout the exacta of Hanalei Moon (winner) and Na Pali Spirit (2nd). We also touted a win-place-show bet on the winner. Not bad.

If you had played just $2 across the board on Hanalei Moon, you would have gotten back $23.20 for each $6 wagered. Not bad, at all.

But wait for it.

If you had played a $1 exacta box, you would have ben rewarded handsomely to the sum of $91.80. Ching Ching Ching.

KY Downs is not running today, so we journey back up to Saratoga for a few selections. Here you go:

Race 1: The MSW event on the grass at the sprint distance of 5.5 furlongs figures to be another edition of the Wesley Ward Hour. Or, at the least, the Wesley Ward Minute. The trainer will saddle both Summer Sangria (8) and Las Ramblas (9) in this spot. The former is coming off a near-miss second on debut here on Aug. 1. Led by over 2 lengths late in the proceedings, but tired mightily before reaching the wire. Should be fitter for this try today and figures to be the heavy favorite, as well. But a filly against colts. I always question. Why? The horse to her outside is the stablemate. Has been working well, but catches a cold rider here this meet and may need a race to face off against the roommate. The horse that bears watching, IMO, is Montana Man (2). This 2YO son of Constitution is trained by Dale Romans, who has certainly heated up this summer after a chilly spring. This one ran 6th here on Aug. 13, but that was over the dirt, and he got a horrible trip under Luis Saez. Gets a new surface, a new rider and the addition of Lasix. I look for huge improvement here in this one. I bet the 2 across the board and then box the 2-8-9 in the exacta.

Race 4: This is a wide open affair on the grass course, and I will take a longshot with a little bit of my Saturday money here on Honey I’m Good (9) at the 8-1 ML odds. Has not been out since late December of 2018 for trainer Steve Asmussen. But the 3YO daughter of Shackelford has 2 wins in 3 lifetime starts and will be trying the grass course for the first time. The dam has 2 turf winners from 6 starters, and the barn hits with .13% first time grass runners. Only bad race on the resume was a stretch out to a mile. Gets to sprint again today. I take a shot here with the 9, betting it across the board and then keying over/under the “all button” in the exactas.

Race 7: Sparkling Sky (6) figures to take much of the betting action, and is an omen horse for me — since we were awoken in the middle of the night to see the “Northern Lights” in Iceland. And, what a show it truly was. Amazing. Good reasons to bet right here, for sure. This one is a 2YO daughter of More Than Ready. Ran great on debut, finishing third behind Crystalle — who just won a Stakes here on return. Wow. But…I really like the first timer from the barn of Chad Brown here, too. Boxer Rebellion (2) is a 2YO daughter of Empire Maker and has the pedigree to run this distance well on debut. Barn has won .24% of its races here this meet. And, this one is training quite nicely, too. Connections paid $420,000 for her. Must like. I bet the 2 across the board and then pound the exacta of 6-2.

Good Luck & All the Best/Gene
