It was an OK day of handicapping at the Fair Grounds on Saturday. But what a day of racing to watch and enjoy. The “Louisiana Derby Preview Day” was spectacular. Just spectacular.
Despite torrential rains that caused the races to be cancelled on Thursday and a couple of the races to be washed off the turf on Saturday, the grounds crew in New Orleans made “Étouffée” out of Kentucky stream crayfish and grits.
Races were safe. Races were exciting. Races were meaningful. Races could be telling, as we inch our way closer to the last Friday in April and the first Saturday in May.
We did manage 4 winners, including our stout tout on Mandaloun in the G2 Risen Star. We also managed to hammer lock the exacta on the G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes, but, then again, who didn’t.
We did come up with exactas that returned $14.20, $14.30, $9.40, $15.60, $7.10, $9.90, $10.70, $7.00 and $13.90 for each $1 played. No big ones to push the bankroll North, but steady income.
Hope to see Turfway Park be able to return to racing later this week, but with the upcoming snow storms predicted? Who knows.
Stay warm. Stay safe. And stay tuned. We will find some races to handicap and watch. Soon.
Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
