Well, it is safe to say that 2023 is fully under way and, so far, 2023 is fully under water for my handicapping prowess.

After the first 119 races of the New Year, we have booted home a meager 33 winners. That computes to a win percentage of a less-than-desirable 27.73%. Ugh.

Up until Saturday, all of those races were at Turfway Park and over the new and improved Tapeta surface. If you follow these pages and these picks for any period of time, you know by now that I am not the best “All Weather” surface handicapper in the world. I have come to it reluctantly, I might add.

But, in the past, I have done some “figures” alterations and held my own until we got to some traditional “dirt” and “turf” races.

So…it might be time, yet again, for some tinkering.

Also, on Saturday, I ventured out and down to the Fair Grounds for 13 races over the traditional surfaces. I managed to win some $ with the exactas. Good news, for sure.

But my top pick ran 2nd on 6 occasions. Wow. Could have been sitting on a huge day.

I didn’t score like I wanted to, but it was reassuring that the “handicapping patterns” are still working. I think. I hope.

We will be back at Turfway this week, beginning on Wednesday. We will have slight modifications to our work sheet. Let’s hope they take hold.
