We had a few scattered wins on Saturday — Kentucky Derby 147.
We had Jackie’s Warrior, who was magnificently fast and magnificently stubborn.
We had Colonel Liam, who was magnificently determined and amazingly tied at the wire.
We had the brilliant Gamine, but, then again, nearly everyone else did, too.
We had Flagstaff, even though we truly thought Whitmore may be able to tag team them and get us the Exacta, too.
But we fanned in the big event — the 147th Kentucky Derby.
Our top picks were Essential Quality and Highly Motivated. They finished a very troubled 4th and a very disappointing 10th, respectively. The previously undefeated “Champ,” had a real excuse. It was called Rock Your World, who hurled into EQ right out of the gate. But Highly Motivated was not highly motivated and ran a rather unmotivated race.
Our third selection, Hot Rod Charlie, did run third and a very respectable race.
But we were not optimistic of Medina Spirit’s chances going into the 11/4-mile Derby.
We are always optimistic when Bob Baffert puts a horse in the Derby, in previous occasions. We should have stayed the course here, too.
We hope you had a great week. We sure did.
See you later this week.
Good luck & All the Best / Gene
