From the Santa Anita Media Team:

JUAN HERNANDEZ, BIG FISH, WINNER: “He broke a little slow, and he was pulling a little bit at the start. On the backside the pace was a little faster and he relaxed much better. Around the turn I had a lot of horses to go, but I didn’t have any room to come through. I had to wait a little bit longer around the turn, and when a little space opened, I asked him and he came through.”

DAVID HOFMANS, BIG FISH, WINNER: “I thought he preferred the turf, but since he was a Cal-bred we thought we’d take advantage of that. He breezed well over (the dirt), the other day with Juan (Hernandez) and seemed to get over it well. He’s just maturing. This horse is just now coming into himself. I think we have a better future going forward.

“I dream all the time, it’s the only reason I get up in the morning, well see what happens. How he comes out of it and go from there.”

ON HIS GROOM: “Fernando, has been with me for about 15 years, his uncle is my barn foreman who has been with me for 30 years. Fernando, almost every time he runs a horse he gets the (Best Turned Out) Award. He’s really a good groom and a good guy and I loved his boots!”

NOTES: The winning owner is Legacy Ranch Inc.
