From the Churchill Downs Media Team:

Ricardo Santana Jr., jockey of MIA MISCHIEF (winner): “(Mia Mischief) is such a nice filly and we beat a very nice filly in Covfefe today. Going around the turn, (Covfefe) kicked clear a little bit and got me a little worried. Mia is such class and just kept digging in for more.”

Steve Asmussen, trainer of MIA MISCHIEF (winner): “It was very special to get this filly back to the winner’s circle and get ready for bigger races down the road.”

On winning 700 races at Churchill Downs: “It’s been incredible to have this opportunity to become only the third trainer in Churchill Downs history to have 700 wins. We’ve been blessed with many great horses to get us there. It’s amazing to be closing in on such a milestone as the all-time leading trainer at Churchill Downs.”

Julien Leparoux, jockey of AWESTRUCK (runner-up): “We ran a great race. We let the horses do their thing on the lead and were able to close ground late to run a really solid second.”

Shaun Bridgmohan, jockey of COVFEFE (third): “We went really fast and she got pressure the entire race. We just got beat today.”

The horse broke well today,” Gaffalione said. “I had the horse inside, Dunph, going to the lead and then (Gun It) showed a little bit of speed. When I saw they were intent on going I just tried to get him back and got him to relax. He came back to me nicely and settled well down the backside. Got a little keen going into the far turn and wanted to move a little early. But I didn’t want to take too much away from him so I tried to sit as long as I could. He was waiting on horses down the lane but I kept him at task and there was plenty of horse there.”

“Mark (Casse, the trainer) and his team have done a great job,” Gaffalione said. “They’ve had a ton of confidence in this horse the whole way. It’s just an honor to be able to ride the horse. He’s just so professional, trains great and he’s a pleasure to be around.”
