From the KY Downs Media Team:

2nd running of the $1,000,000 Gun Runner Stakes, 3-year-olds, 1 mile, includes KTDF of $400,000

Reeve McGaughey, assistant trainer to dad Shug McGaughey, winning trainer Talk of the Nation:

“We always figured he was going to want the grass. When he won the dirt, we had to give him one more try to make sure. As soon as he got on the grass, he was a different horse.”

“We were confident (going into the Gun Runner). His last race, he got hounded the whole way. He put that horse away and just got run down late. They freshened him up in New York and have been pointing for this all summer. We figured he’d probably like this turf course, and luckily he did.”

Winning Jockey Jose Ortiz, Talk of the Nation:

“He broke very alert. The other horse (Smokey Mandatee) went to the lead and I wanted to give him a target. Last time (in the Manila at Belmont on July 7) , i went to the lead and he was pressed the whole way. He finished, he dug in (finishing second), but today I wanted him to be more relaxed. In the last race, I had a horse outside of me pressuring me every step of the way. Today, I had nobody outside, I could sit, I could move whenever I wanted. It worked out great.”
