In 11 days, we will have us one heckuva horse race.

Dennis’ Moment vs. Structor vs. Shotski vs. Chance It?

In 11 days, the “Road to the KY Derby” may become a little more paved; a little less gravel.

In 11 days, the G2 Fountain of Youth will be contested at Gulfstream Park in South Florida. And, in 11 days, we should know a lot more about the horses; about the contenders and the pretenders; and the ones marching on to March and Zion.

In 11 days, the arguments may begin to make a lot more sense. In 11 days, we will let the horses do a lot more talking, and stalking, and walking.

Some will be merging into the fast lanes of the “Road to the Triple Crown.”

Others may be submerging.

We shall see.

In 11 days.

But that’s in 11 days.

Up until then, we are left to speculate.

Much.

Up until then, we can juggle and joust.

Much.

Up until then, we can argue and debate.

Much.

There is a lot to think and talk about.

Especially after the topsy turvy versions of the Risen Star Stakes, which saw two unexpected winners trampoline into the spotlight and into consideration for the Kentucky Derby on the First Saturday in May, and the sudden re-emergence of Silver Prospector in the G3 Southwest Stakes on Monday.

Where does Mr. Monomoy — the younger half-brother to the great Champ Monomoy Girl — now figure into the scenario after his impressive and powerful win in one of the divisions of the G2 Risen Star?

Where does Bill Mott and his steed Modernist now figure to go next, or become then?

There is a lot to mourn, and consider, too.

Especially with the news of the tragic, awful, disgusting injury that the grand Taraz suffered in training at Oaklawn Park this week. Just a week ago, we moved Taraz to 5th in our “Derby Rankings.” She had been that good. That impressive. That daunting. That physical and dominating.

Earlier in the week, we even talked to trainer Brad Cox about this filly and her chances to dance the Derby Trail. Although the talented trainer suggested that Taraz would stay with the fillies and may head to the KY Oaks, he was full of energy and hope.

Now, after a horrific training accident, some of that energy is drained.

Some of the hope is dashed.

There is so much to look back on and remember. Fondly.

Still, there is so much to look forward to and consider. Hopefully.

In 11 days, we will get to see much more. In 11 days, we get to see the 2020 version of Dennis’ Moment — a striking son of Tiznow that we have admired and watched since he first stepped hooves to dirt at Churchill Downs.

Until we are convinced otherwise, Dennis’ Moment is our #1.

Has been.

Still is.

Until we see what happens in 11 days.
