The “Baffert Bunch” is what I like to call them.
There is Authentic — the winner of the G2 San Felipe Stakes and the likely favorite for this year’s Santa Anita Derby if the city officials allow Santa Anita to resume racing any time soon.
There is the massive Nadal — the impressive winner of the G2 Rebel Stakes last time out and the likely favorite for this year’s G1 Arkansas Derby on what used to be KY Derby Day.
There is the rapidly improving and the “simply rapid” Charlatan — an over-powering winner of an allowance race at Santa Anita just a few minutes after Nadal’s win in the Rebel Stakes. Many claim that Charlatan’s win was even more eye catching.
And, then there is Eight Rings and Thousand Words — both of whom have enough pedigree and credentials to join their more accomplished roommates in this year’s chase for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, which has now been moved to the first Saturday in September.
Any one of the top 3 certainly would not be a surprise winner of this year’s “Run for the Roses.”
Either of the other 2 would not shock the world, either.
Certainly, it appears that “The Baffert Bunch” is lining up for another big run.
So much so, in fact, that the only thing that may keep Baffert from winning yet another Derby hat-trick would be if the coronavirus has not departed our company and our country come September.
Let’s hope to God that the virus is gone. Sooner rather than latter.
Let’s hope that the “Baffert Bunch” get their respective chances.
Let’s hope that the 2020 Kentucky Derby is thrilling as it is already eventful.
After all, what’s a Kentucky Derby without a Bob Baffert?
