Finally, the time is almost upon us. Finally, the time is nearly here. Finally, we get to see the new (and improved?) version of Dennis’ Moment.
This Saturday, the gifted colt will make his 3YO and his 2020 debut in the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Sweet. Georgia. Brown. Ever since we first laid eyes on this beautifully balanced and gifted son of Tiznow last summer — as a fledgling baby — we have been looking forward.
Looking forward to his racing debut — which, unfortunately for us bettors, turned into a debacle. The jockey at the time, Robby Albarado, tried to slip the young and stout colt through an opening on the rail that a bobble head couldn’t fit in. Horse steadied sharply and swerved immediately. Jockey exited stage right. Horse came home in front, sans rider, and thankfully safe.
Then, we looked forward to his next race. A win.
Then, we looked forward to his first Stakes race. Another win in the G3 Iroquois at Churchill Downs.
Then, we looked forward to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile — which, unfortunately for us bettors, turned into another debacle. As soon as the gate popped in this affair, Dennis’ Moment full thrust of energy turned the ground beneath him into quicksand. The colt went to his knees. The rider — Irad Ortiz, Jr. — nearly went to his grave. The trainer’s heart nearly went to his knees, too. Thankfully, the colt returned safe and sound and ready for some R&R.
We looked forward. To the New Year. To the New, 3YO Year. To the Spring. To the Triple Crown prep races. To a chance for redemption. To a chance for KY Derby Fever. To suspense, drama, and a chance to give the winningest trainer in the history of Churchill Downs — the affable Dale Romans — his first Kentucky Derby win. As in? As in, ever.
This Saturday, the wait is over. Dennis’ Moment — our #1 contender for the 2020 Kentucky Derby — will run in the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
He will run against the likes of Shotski — our #17 in our rankings and the runner-up in the Withers Stakes in his last start. Dennis’ may run against the likes of Structor — our #16 in our rankings and the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last November in his last start. Dennis’ is likely to face the talented Chance It, our #19 selection. He blew out on Monday is an eye-popping time and looks primed for his next start after winning the Mucho Macho Man Stakes here earlier this winter. Dennis’ may line up against Green Light Go, another speedy type who was last seen running third in the G3 Swale Stakes.
It will be a bold test. No doubt.
But we are ready. We’ve been looking forward for a long time.
Now, it is time to look at Dennis’ Moment.
And, it’s time to see if he is as ready as we are.
Then, we can see if we can all look forward to that First Saturday in May. With excitement.
