With about a month to go in this year’s annual Spring/Summer race meeting at historic Churchill Downs, the race for the trainer’s title could literally come down to the wire. In this race; it this year; in this meet, the margin is this: there is no margin.

After Monday’s holiday card was completed, both Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen and Kenny McPeek were tied at the top with 11 wins each. Michael Tomlinson is just a win back in third with 10 trips to the winner’s circle.

And, just three wins off the pace are Ian Wilkes, Mike Maker, Rusty Arnold and Eddie Kenneally — all of whom have 8 wins each.

In fact, it may be one of the tightest and most hotly contested “Trainer’s Title” races in recent history and memory.

To date, Asmussen has saddled 51 horses at this meet, and has totaled 11 wins, 8 seconds and 7 thirds. His horses have amassed over $550,000 in purse earnings already. McPeek, on the other hand, has had 44 horses start this meet and has 11 wins, 10 seconds and 5 thirds. His horses have earned over $411,000 in purse money.

The most amazing training job this meet, though, may be the job turned in by Tomlinson. He has had only 21 horses start this meet. Twenty-one. Out of that number, he has 10 wins, 1 second and 1 third. His win percentage is an amazing .48% and his “in the money” percentage is a lofty 57%.

The only trainer on the grounds to rival those percentages is Kenneally. He has saddled 18 horses and has a record of 8-3-2. That amounts to a win percentage of .44%, and his horses have hit the board an amazing 72%.
