Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over North America, searching for those horses that just may be peaking at the right time and ready to pop in the afternoons. Some of the horses that we track, you will recognize and know immediately. Others, though, you may not know — yet.  Here is a closer look at today’s top works:

  1. C Z Rocket, a 3YO City Zip colt trained by Al Stall, has burst onto the racing scene this Fall  with back-to-back wins at, first, Saratoga in September, and, then, at Keeneland in October. At Keeneland, he stormed from well back in the pack to win going away by 21/2 lengths as the odds-on favorite. Keep an eye on this guy. He can really run.  And, he was back on the Churchill Downs main track this morning, working a half mile in :49.80 — which was the 29th best time out of 55. This one has Stakes company stamped all over him.
  2. Belles Orb, a talented 2YO filly by Kentucky Derby winner Orb, broke her maiden on July 2 at Ellis Park going 5Fs on the dirt. She has been absent in the afternoon since then, but she was back on the dirt track at Churchill Downs this morning, working for trainer Eddie Kenneally. She went a half mile in :48 flat, which was the 4th best time out of 55 to go. This was her fourth straight work since Oct. 25, and she is getting closer to a return to the races. Keep a sharp eye on this one’s return.
  3. Givemeaminit is a Louisiana-bred trained by Dallas Stewart who is still a maiden after four career starts, but the 2YO son of Star Guitar has a third place finish in the G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga; a 5th place finish in the G1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity; and, most recently, ran a huge 4th in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar behind winner Good Magic and third-place finisher Bolt d’Oro. He worked a half mile at Churchill this morning in :48.40, which was the 9th best time out of 55.  Look for this one to show up in the Kentucky Jockey Club, perhaps, in his next.
  4. Lookin for Eight, who ran 5th in this year’s G1 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park behind winner Gunnevera and runner-up Practical Joke, got back on the winning track in his last out for trainer Mark Casse. He won an allowance at Churchill Downs on Nov. 1, and he was back in training here today. He breezed a half mile in :48 flat, as well, which was the 5th best time.  Keep an eye out for this one.
  5. Queen Mum, a 2YO daughter of Paynter trained by Casse, has started her career in style, winning on debut at Churchill Downs Sept. 21 and then returning to run a game second in the Rags to Riches Stakes here on Oct. 29. She finished well behind Monomoy Girl, who got free on the lead that day, but she was the only one closing at the end. She worked a half mile at Churchill today, as well, covering the distance in :47.60 — which was the bullet work out of the 55. She is geared up and ready to rock.
  6. Road to Victory, a 2YO daughter of Quality Road, went in company with her stablemate, Queen Mum this morning. They hit the wire at the same time. This one broke her maiden on debut at Woodbine. And, seems to be getting better and better and today showed she loves the traditional dirt just as much as the polytrack they have in Canada. Both of these fillies may show up in a stakes here at the end of the meet.
