Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks and training facilities all over North America searching for those horses that may be peaking at just the right time for a pop performance in the afternoons. Some of the horses that we track, you will know and recognize. Others, though, you may not know — yet. Here is a closer look at today’s works and upcoming races for our “Horses to Watch” list:

Top Works:

  1. Dream Tree, a 2YO filly by Uncle Mo trained by Bob Baffert, made her first appearance on the track in earnest after winning the Dezi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar. She went 6Fs in a bullet time of 1:12.80, which was best of four to go that far. It will be interesting what the world’s top trainer will do next, but this one is now a perfect 2-for-2 in her brief career and is already a Stakes winner.
  2. Paradise Woods, the run-away winner of the Santa Anita Oaks earlier this spring, turned in a half-mile work for trainer Richard Mandella this morning at Santa Anita. She went the distance in :49:00 flat, which was the 16th best time out of 28 to go this a.m. It was the first serious move for this daughter of Union Rags since she ran a tiring third behind Unbridled Forever and Abel Tasman in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff. This filly has freaky-good speed numbers.
  3. Flatlined, a 5YO son of Flatter who won the Cliff Guilliams Stakes at Ellis Park and ran second in the Tourist Mile at Kentucky Downs before running a disappointing 9th in the G1 Shadwell Mile at Keeneland, was on the track at Gulfstream Park this morning for trainer Scooter Dickey. He went a half-mile in :46.12, which was the best time out of two to go that distance this morning. This one ran one of his biggest races ever over the grass right here at Gulfstream Park. May be peaking at the right time again.
  4. Mo Shopping, a homebred 2YO filly out of Stopshoppingmaria for the Repole Stables, got her third work since disappointing on debut. The dam was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2011. This one was favored on debut, but had nothing to show when angled out for the drive. Worked a half in company this morning for trainer Todd Pletcher at the Palm Beach Downs in :49.76, which was tied for the best time of 7 to go the distance.

Horses Entered:

  1. Practical Joke, who is featured in our main breeding piece today, has been entered for the G1 Cigar Mile, which will be contested at Aqueduct this Saturday.  It will be the last race for the colt by Into Mischief before he heads to stud duty at Ashford Stud. Regular rider Joel Rosario has been named to pilot him again for trainer Chad Brown. I’m seriously betting.
  2. Fasciliatator, a top rated 2YO colt for trainer Steve Asmussen, has been scratched out of a couple of races lately, due to poor post position draws. He has been entered to run on Dec. 7 at The Fairgrounds, and will have Florent Geroux in the saddle. Keep an eye on this one, who will be going 51/2-furlongs on the turf in this MSW event. I’m betting.
  3. Magical Holiday, a 3YO filly trained by Mark Casse, has been entered for Dec. 2 at Woodbine. She will be guided by jockey Patrict Husbands in this one that is slated to go 11/16-miles on the all weather surface. I’m betting.
